Let's hear it for Joan Baez

<snip>
People often ask Baez why she carries on protesting when there is so little progress to show for it. "It's not even lack of progress," she says in her low, ironic drawl, "it's a downward slide towards the apocalypse. People say, 'Oh, Miss Baez, how do you keep up your optimism?' And I say, 'I never had any. I was way too smart. I'm a realist.' And they look shocked and hurt, because they're depending on me to say something that'll make them feel better." She giggles again. "I have hope in people, in individuals. Because you don't know what's going to rise from the ruins. I mean, Michael Moore - where did he come from? This big, floppy, fat, strange man, who makes these unbelievable films saying exactly how it is. You think when you see that, how can anyone possibly vote for Bush? After seeing what a hypocritical, lying bastard he is?"

1. I know exactly what she means
I have had to divorce myself from the outcome. What matters is how I behave through all of this. If I can look myself in the mirror and feel okay about what I'm doing, then that just has to be enough.

3. Exactly.
It can't be the outcome, it has to be the gesture in the moment.

Now, I will go eat some tofu before my evening meditation. lol

4. Funny
You don't seem like the tofu eating surrender monkey type. ;)

Though I don't doubt that you may like tofu and even meditation, I've seen you kick ass and I would stand and kick ass with you any day.

6. I like her philosophy
As a realist, I know I cannot do much. I'm just one person. I'm not Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr. Those were people who just happened to be in the right place in exceptional times, and they did something that caught the attention of others, and they continued to listen. They were lucky in that case.

I don't know the future of the US, but I don't feel it's necessarily good. All I can really do is concentrate on what I have to do in my life. Along the way, maybe I can save a couple of people and end up with travel mates on the road of life. I figure if everybody did this, you'd have a movement that cannot be destroyed by assassinating or removing a leader because in a sense it is a movement of leaders, not followers.

The future is uncertain, and it's full of dangers, but we can only continue to move forward.

7. I just finished reading the whole article
Codependent is not something I would have associated with Joan Baez but now that I think about it........

No one who knows me now would know that I'm a recovering codependent either. But there you have it.

I'm pleased to see this has four recommendations now. I'm guessing it will have the fifth by morning.

This isn't my original post but I would love to see it on the greatest page. I've already recommended it. Would you be willing to be the fifth person?

14. You go to the original post
And at the bottom of the post, there are all sorts of options on the lower left. One of them is the recommend button. Once a post has five recommendations, it goes on the Greatest page in ascending order for 24 hours. Many only read the greatest page so it gets much more exposure that way.

Thanks!

16. No problem
I've been here for quite a while and I just figured out the ignore feature. Next week, I'm intending to learn the buddy feature. Then, I might try to remember how to update my profile or add pictures. Or not.

There are so many features here, that I know we all miss some.
