- Harold Ford, Jr.
MEMPHIS - Tonight, Harold Ford, Jr. overwhelmingly won the first United States Senate debate in Memphis. Addressing the issues that matter most to Tennesseans, Congressman Ford laid out a clear vision of leadership for the nation and Tennessee.
From energy freedom to education to healthcare to defending our country to cutting taxes for working families and small business, Harold Ford gave Tennesseans a clear path for change and an independent voice in Washington. On every issue, his opponent, Bob Corker, showed that he will be a rubber stamp for a failed course in Washington.
Once again, Congressman Ford told the truth to Tennessee voters. He gave them the hard facts and offered them real solutions to the challenges ahead. And once again, Bob Corker continued his obsession with secrecy by failing to release his tax returns to Tennesseans. By not trusting Tennessee voters, he hides the reason he shielded two-thirds of his income from taxation from 1981 to 1993. When faced with inconvenient facts and uncomfortable truths, Bob Corker’s answer was predictable: lie about it, forget about it or not talk about it.
Most telling was Bob Corker’s statement that he had never advocated “stay the course” in Iraq, directly contradicting his statement on the same stage in the primary debate here in July.
The candidates will debate again Tuesday, October 10 at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.
