5. There seems to be very little talk on how it started
Most Journos, are saying, "there is no official word" even though eyewitnesses said it was an attack.

7. Okay, there isn't much out there--
but here is BBC:

<snip>

The US military blamed the explosions on ammunition "cooking off" in the heat. They said they did not know what had caused the initial fire.

<snip>

"Given the number and the scale of these explosions - and this is a very large base with a large number of troops - casualties are a possibility," he said.

The US military reported a number of attacks on the base earlier on Tuesday, although there was no confirmation that an attack caused the fire.

8. That article reaks of govt speak ...translation..
Our exhausted troops were too busy burying their comrades or repairing their damaged equipment to notice that insurgents (def. An Iraqi national who's grandma was killed when her house was bombed)had snuck into the base and blew up a bunch of shit.

Blasts rock central Baghdad
11 October 2006

UPDATED REPORT - 2.15pm

"The Islamic Army... (launched) rockets and mortar bombs... at a base for the occupying American forces. Explosions could be heard in Baghdad," said the statement signed by the group and posted on a Web site often used by Islamist militants.

The Islamic Army in Iraq is one of a number of militant groups operating in Iraq and has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on US-led forces as well as the kidnap and murder of several foreign contractors.

Iraqiya state television showed pictures of a huge fire lighting up the night sky.

Reuters reporters in central Baghdad heard more than 30 explosions, which began at about 11 pm (9am New Zealand time).

Baghdad is Burning

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- A fire broke out at an ammunition dump at a U.S. base in southern Baghdad on Tuesday night, setting off a series of explosions from detonating tank and artillery shells that shook buildings miles away. The U.S. military said there were no immediate reports of casualties.

It was not clear whether the ammunition holding area at Forward Operating Base Falcon was hit by an attack. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, said Lt. Col. Christopher C. Garver, a military spokesman.
