6. just in from Jim Davis...
Today is the day we have all been waiting for. After ducking many opportunities to appear on stage with Jim Davis, Charlie Crist is finally going to talk with Jim about the major issues facing Florida. This will be a great opportunity to compare Jim’s vision of change and new, independent leadership with Charlie’s plans to “stay the course.”

Jim’s supporters will be gathering tonight all across the state at a number of debate watch parties. For a complete list of them, please visit the events section of our website here. If you happen to live in Broward, Jim will be attending the debate watch party in Plantation immediately following the debate. If you are unable to join us at any of the parties, please be sure to tune in to your local PBS station tonight at 8:00pm. With the news yesterday that this race is now tied, this debate will be especially important.

Today we also released a new Internet ad. It examines Charlie Crist’s record of looking the other way while Floridians suffer from skyrocketing insurance rates. When we needed him to stand up to insurance companies, he launched “folic acid awareness week.” When we needed him to protect our families, he went after a wedding photographer. Floridians need a governor to stand up for them, not for the insurance companies. Charlie Crist has proven time and again that he is not willing to take action when it matters. 7. Linn blocked from debate

Linn's Podium Now Offstage
Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeal has ruled Max Linn, the hard-charging Reform Party candidate for Florida governor, doesn’t have to be included in Tuesday night’s debate between the Democratic and Republican candidates. (Click on image at left to enlarge.)

The order, handed down shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, was a victory for Leadership Florida and other debate sponsors, which had argued that Linn never met the criteria to be included in the debate: at least a 10-percent showing in two independent statewide polls.

Within 30 minutes of the appeal court’s ruling, extra podiums were removed from the debate stage at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, leaving one each for U.S. Rep. Jim Davis, D-Tampa, and Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist, R-St. Petersburg.

Jeff Bartel, chairman of Leadership Florida, was pleased. “We fully respect Mr. Linn’s right to candidacy but we took issue with his right to participate in the debate based on criteria set months ago,” Bartel said.

It was a quick reversal of fortune for Linn, who couldn’t be reached immediately for comment. Late Monday a trial judge in Broward County ordered he be included in the debate calling the 10 percent criteria, “subjective,” and immaterial compared to the public’s right to know a candidates’ position.
