Did Nacy Pelosi actually say she wanted to cut defense spending by a billion dollars?
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 06:10 PM by FVZA_Colonel
I recently received an e-mail claiming that very thing, and after checking her voting record at the Washington Post's online record site I found that this doesn't seem to hold true. Has she said this somewhere?

9. I'd like to cut it by $300B and keep it at a reasonable $200B
The amount of waste and fraud, combined with this illegal and disastrous war, are gutting our national budget and sending the US quickly into second-world status. If we ever get control again, the GAO should be bulked up, along with other accounting agences to cut out all the pork and defense industry welfare. Then do the rest with other branches of government and start taxing the rich again to at least begin paying down the national debt.

10. Less, total defense spending is closer to $675 billion.
And I don't think that includes the wars.

8. Considering the war in Iraq has cost hundreds of billions, that's a small amount.
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 06:27 PM by Clarkie1
Don't know if she said it or not.

Edit: Incidentally, I recall Clark saying when he was running for Pres he would consider cutting the defense budget.

11. Rep. Lynn Woolsey and the House Progressive Caucus.....
Have introduced bills for a $60 billion cut in defense spending

http://woolseyforpeace.org/?q=node/70

The legislation would divert $60 billion from the Pentagon budget, and allocate it to social investment, renewable energy and humanitarian aid. Fifteen other members of the Progressive Caucus, of which Woolsey is co-chair, are co-sponsoring the bill.

Sixty billion dollars obviously goes a long way when it comes to people's needs, and the legislation promises to do a lot. Among the programs that would benefit:

* $10 billion annually would go to provide health care coverage for millions of uninsured children.

* $10 billion a year would be spent on modernizing schools.

* $10 billion would be invested annually in renewable energy.

* $13 billion would be spent every year on humanitarian foreign aid.-snip-

Now, that may not sound like much, but remember, they don't want to get their heads blown off

14. I don't think we should cut it, we should re-prioritize it...
repair our equipment, pay our soldiers well, and develop new technologies which are promising, not ones which sound like a bunch of bullshit.

18. Sheesh. DU geniues at work again....
Let's rephrase the question:

Did Nacy Pelosi actually say she wanted to cut defense spending by .2% (that's right - not even 1%)?

Answer: Who cares - it's only 1/5 of 1% - sheesh.

It took me a whopping 15 seconds worth of googling to learn the completely worthlessness of the question.

just call the person to cite their sources or shut up. and when/if they cite, then say GOOD! an Nth of a % can't do any damage and the Pentagon is beyond "bloated big government." that person can go suck on an $800 military toilet seat.

Edited on Sun Oct-29-06 03:40 AM by LaPera
Iraq doesn't count in Petagon spending. It's like, well, I don't know....

Bankruptcy is one of the republican goals....Bankrupt Social Security (the big daddy)is their ultimate goal...the rest of the "New Deal" will fall in place for them to destroy.

23. $1Billion Dollars is 4 days in Iraq....its nothing.....except for maybe about 15 US soldiers lives
if you base it on the current death rate of our soldiers in Iraq this month - 98 dead so far in October.

Half a week and 15 less US soldiers dead sounds like a worthwhile effort to me....

I have an even better suggestion though - get out of Iraq entirely and cut out atleast 330 Billion $$$ from defense spending! Bush figures we need to be in Iraq atleast through 2010 and the figures the Pentagon gives for redeployment costs is $70 Billion. So, at the current $2 Billion a week spending, I think the US should get far more conservative in their spending than they have been....and put it towards REAL border and port security and securing the nation here...at home....and spending the money on our country....here....
