World News Tonight on ABC just over and i still miss the guy. Charlie Gibson is good and doing fine but damn...i miss Peter.

I wonder what he would have to say about the comments KO has made recently and what his opinion of Network news is/has become these days.

Anyone else feel the same way?

1. I miss him too.
I stopped watching the network news when he got sick. He was a fantastic anchor with a great delivery and a driving curiosity about the world.

2. "Driving curiosity about the world" Well said and spot on....
if only our president could be referred to in the same way, much less the like of the Sean Hannity's of the world.

I cant remember how many times i got up from the chair after watching World News Tonight, after hearing him sign off and saying "Thanks Peter" like he was just there...behind the glass, actually letting me know personally what happened today and how it might affect me.

I now set aside the eight-o-clock hour religiously for Keith Olbermann every weeknight because i know when he gets to "Good Night and Good Luck" my sentiment is the same.

Thanks, Keith. And thank you, Peter.

I miss you

4. I miss him also.
I always said when WW3 starts this is the man I want to break the news to me. And so I watched him as much as possible on September 11. He had great instincts. He knew it wasn't right that Bush was flying around the country all day, worried about himself and not about what was happening. I trusted him as I trusted Rather and Brokaw, to at least have some real reporter in them. I don't trust the next generation of talking heads at all.

5. I don't miss Jennings one little bit....he was nothing but a Bush/RW enabler,
afraid of being considered "too liberal"

here's one example (they are myriad....do a little checking) of his cowardice/rationalization for being anything but an independent journalist, and for the most pathetic of reasons: he was afraid of the influence of the likes of RUSH LIMBAUGH!

http://www.moderateindependent.com/v1i10jennings.htm

>>>>

SEPTEMBER 10, 2003 – "Are we out of step with the administration because we do not comport completely to their political point of view?' he asks. 'So they criticize us for it. It goes with the territory, and if we get a groundswell we begin to look at ourselves. "Are we? Are we not?" I don't think the public realizes how much soul-searching goes on in news organizations about what is the right thing to do.'" - Peter Jennings, as quoted in USA Today.

Here is a clear example of how the mainstream media has been bullied to the right. Look at his question, "Are we out of step with the administration..." as if he is supposed to be a puppet station that is in step with the administration.

Then he says, "...if we get a groundswell (of criticism) we begin to look at ourselves. 'Are we?" Exactly what the Bush-brand bullies hope for.

The anchor of ABC World News tonight says ''We have been criticized, a little bit to my surprise, by people who think I was not enough pro-war." He is surprised? What planet is he living on, and how can a news anchor for one of the biggest networks really not be aware of the obvious tactic that is the main tool of the Bushies - that they insult anyone who doesn't say exactly what they want them to as left-wing, biased, etc.

.......

just ask Bush tool Wolf Blitzer how it works. at least he fought back a little after getting his nose rubbed in it last week, unlike the cowardly Jennings

7. Of course you don't.
But your attempt to paint him as an enabler of bushco, is both shrill and weak. That's the best you could come up with? LOL

17. that's just one of myriad examples....guess you don't remember
Edited on Tue Oct-31-06 05:08 PM by Gabi Hayes
how he treated Dem candidates during his round as moderator before the nomination.

of course you don't, because of your slavish devotion to a fabulously rich denizen of the highest echelon of the M$M, which, as we all know, is just as slavishly devoted to the advancement of truth

jesus, did you see ANY of his suckass interviews with Bush before the 2000 election? Those were almost as nauseating as your convenient, selective memory

do you have any idea what you're talking about?

of course you don't

as usual

8. I wouldn't say that.
I developed alot of respect for Peter Jennings during the first Gulf War.

The first night of air strikes on Baghdad, the reporters on the scene were watching explosions in the distance and saying that the US military had assured tham that the bombs were not being dropped in residential neighborhoods. All of a sudden, Jennings, who was in New York, orders the camera crew to pan across the city toward the explosions.

"I used to live in Baghdad." he said. He then pointed out several buildings and announced that in his opinion the bombs were indeed falling on a neighborhood full of innocent people--albeit one with several government buildings in it.

It took considerable courage to do that. There were several other things through the years that made me continue to like Jennings.

He is certainly missed.

6. Another one who misses Peter
When I was a senior in high school I wrote him because I decided I was going to be a Journalism major in college, and I asked him which courses I should take and how should I prepare, etc.....not really expecting a response.

He wrote me back. Took about 3 months. Signed the letter and everything.

Not long after he died I had the letter and envelope mounted and framed.

Didn't major in Journalism after all, but am still impressed he wrote me back.

10. Charlie Gibson is bland and inoffensive enough for both sides to tolerate
but he hasn't got a clue what's going on in this country.

11. I've also been missing Peter Jennings...

Living in the Philly viewing area, ABC's Local Action News left the other news programs in the dust ... so my family had been long time ABC Evening News watchers (pre-remote controls, doncha know). I remember my Dad announcing he was switching to another station because Jennings was TOO LIBERAL!!

I wish we had real new anchors again.

13. you mean $28 thousand a day/365 days/year jennings?
jennings got $10 million/yr not for reporting news, or informing an electorate, or serving the 'public', or anything like that....
when he died his estate was $58 million...
you people who miss him; surely you can't mean that.....

14. Why would you bemoan someone who was compensated well for doing something
he was good at?

I'm sorry, but i just don't get that sentiment. Your remark that he "got $10 million/yr not for reporting news, or informing an electorate, or serving the 'public', or anything like that..."

I find offensive if not deliberately inaccurate. How is it that he didn't "Inform the Electorate"?

Look...the best news person in this country might very well be Amy Goodman but unfortunately, in spite of her point of view and her abilities, she looks like crap on TV and sounds almost as bad (flame suit on) with her monotone delivery.

Whether or not you liked him, it is hard to deny that Peter Jennings, like Keith Olbermann, was good at his job.

The fact that he made good money doing it and left an estate as a testimony is beside the point.

Let me quote myself;

"Gibson is good and doing fine"

not - "Gibson is an excellent replacement" or "Gibson is the answer to my news provider dreams"

"Doing fine" is hardly a ringing endorsement.

Sheeeeeeit. The only reason i started this thread was to see if others felt the same way i did about the late, GREAT Peter Jennings, a man who had more front line news experience than any 50 other news reporters on TV today.

Sorry Southpawkicker, but this thread isn't about Gibson. If you didn't care for Mr. Jennings talents than so be it, but Gibson isn't the point.
