Soldier convicted of abusing detainees returning to Iraq
File this under ARE THEY INSANE?

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) -- An Army dog handler convicted of abusing detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq has returned to the country with his military police unit, a military spokesman confirmed.

Well, at least they are keeping his identity a secret, for his and his unit's safety.

Sgt. Santos A. Cardona boarded a plane Monday bound for Iraq. He is assigned to the 23rd Military Police Company, said Maj. James Crabtree, a spokesman for the 18th Airborne Corps, which is headquartered at Fort Bragg.

<snip>
Cardona fears he and his unit might be targeted by insurgents because he appears in at least one al-Qaeda propaganda video depicting the abuse at Abu Ghraib, close friends told Time magazine, which first reported Cardona's deployment at Time.com.

O-Kay, so they know his name, what he looks like, and his unit number, but the severity of his sentence should make his enemies feel that he has been punished for his crime, right?

A military jury sentenced him to 90 days of hard labor with no prison time. He was sent back to his unit at Fort Bragg, where his company commander was to decide what duties to assign as hard labor, said a military lawyer after the sentencing.

All right, no help there, Hmmm... maybe he will just be an office guy, far removed from danger and controversy.

The unit will focus on law enforcement, detainee operations and route security and to a lesser extent training Iraqi police.

TRAINING IRAQI POLICE?? You mean the same Iraqi Police that have been infiltrated by insurgents?

COME ON - are they really so hard up for soldiers that they are going to send this kid to his Not to mention that his unit will be a PRIME TARGET for pissed-off Iraqis.

4. Yes. This is totally insane. He deserves punishment, but not what he and his
unit will be facing.
