Well after all my damn phone calls and faxes, LIEberman is opposing
Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, D-Conn., saying he was "left with just too many doubts," announced today he will vote against confirming Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the U.S. Supreme Court.

~~snippy-snip~~

Lieberman, who joins the state's senior senator, Sen. Christopher J. Dodd, D-Conn., in opposition, said in a Senate floor speech that he was disturbed by Alito's record on privacy and civil rights issues.

~~snippy-snip~~

"When asked at confirmation hearings about questions of personal privacy, Judge Alito accepted the 1965 decision in the case as settled law," Lieberman said. That Supreme Court case overturned a state law barring married couples from using contraception, and was important for focusing on the right of married couples' privacy. Privacy became crucial in later cases, notably the 1973 Roe v. Wade case, which established a woman's right to an abortion.

~~snippy-snip~~

Lieberman explained that Alito met three of the four tests he applies before judging a nominee. Alilto has "shown he is a person of considerable intellect and ability," the senator said, and had an impressive legal background. And Lieberman had no doubts about his character -- "I thought he emerged with his honesty and integrity intact," he said.

But on the fourth standard, judicial philosophy, Lieberman thought Alito's record raised concerns.

~~snippy-snip~~

On civil rights, for instance, Lieberman was concerned that Alito too often barred legal remedies for people who thought they had been hurt by discriminatory practices.

The question is if he will support a filibuster? I'm starting the rounds again tomorrow... We CAN do this! We WILL prevail!

1. Once in awhile Lieberman is still useful
but I find those instances to be rarer and rarer these days.

2. That's true
His "war" stance is unacceptable but sometimes he comes through in cases like this, ANWR and Patriot Act cloture.

He is facing some opposition here for his seat so his judgment may be for totally different reasons.

18. We'll see. He and other soi-disant Dems make these token
gestures when they know that the Republicans will win anyway.

5. This is probably just pandering....
After the Ned Lamont challenge seems to be heating up.

Lieberman continues to weaken the Democratic party every minute he holds office.

I didn't expect Joe Leiberman to vote against Alito, but I'm glad he is!

14. If you knew anything about him
you wouldn't be surprised. Lieberman has a long record of being liberal on domestic issues. Having said that, I support Ned Lamont. Lieberman's support for the Iraq war is too big of a negative.

I will refrain from any snarky comments about his motivation. He's doing the right thing.

Lieberman would vote on the good side of such an important issue while my (ex) hero, Robert Byrd would betray us. :puke:

20. That's nice, he'll vote against Delito
So will he vote against cloture?

Voting for cloture is voting for the end of choice, the "unitary executive" or whatever that whacko doctrine is called and for a RW rubber stamp for W.

I know from friends in CT if he had supported Alito, they would have bet money that he would never get re-elected....
