So let's see, Kerry is playing to the extreme left wing of his party, he is ruining his presidential aspirations by alienating moderate Dems, his filibuster attempt is expected to be defeated on Monday, to be followed on Tuesday by Alito's confirmation, and that was just about 5 minutes of CNN. I didn't even get a chance to flip around. So tell me again, how Kerry did this for his own political advantage?

that's how. see my thread about placating the base. I don't think Kerry has personal interests in mind, as much as it being a Senate-wide damage control maneuver after the deal was already done.
