Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) plans to vote yes...now taking TALLY!
Edited on Fri Jan-27-06 04:54 PM by Wordie
His office is taking a tally of support/oppose Alito calls. Call NOW!

Ben Nelson (D-NE) 202-224-6551

You can also use these toll-free numbers (and ask for the Senators by name): 888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641.

Don't even take the time to explain WHY, just tell them that you think he should oppose Alito and support the filibuster. Be quick, so other calls can get through.

Please keep this kicked while Senate offices are open!

I implored him to STAND AS ONE, UNITED, DEMOCRATIC PARTY along with the BRAVEST of the Senate and vote NO on Alito, and to support the fillibuster. For once, I wish they would vote for the people instead of POLITICS!! DC

He asked where I was calling from and I said "Well, (short pause) I'm calling from California." He said "That's ok. That works." He asked my name and the city I lived in and then told me that he has had quite a busy afternoon. I thanked him for his time and hung up. "That's ok" and "that works"...and telling me he was having a busy afternoon were all positive responses, IMO.

Peace.

yes to the filibuster, or at least ABSTAIN because I'm an American also in a red state, deeply concerned about this imperial presidency ... staffer was very gracious AND efficient ... yes, they are tallying!

No quizzes, just took the plea for NO on Alito, support the filibuster or at least Don't Support Cloture.

Everyone if you call, please be pleasant.

80. Here is a verbatim conversation with a staffer in Ben Nelson's office
staffer: "Senator Ben Nelson's office"

me: "Yes, I'd like to voice an opinion on the Alito confirmation please"

staffer: "You'd like to him to vote against Alito?" <pause> "and support the filibuster"

me: "Yes, I most assuredly would"

staffer: "Thank you, I'll let him know"

me: "Thank you very much"

Notice that the staffer was literally able to fill in the blanks as to why I was calling. I made NO mention of what my stance on Alito was, but I am guessing that he is getting one hell of a lot of calls AGAINST the good judge.

CALL BEN NELSON"S OFFICE, DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

98. If he changed his vote, it would probably mean that
in his next election, he would have 1000s and 1000s of Dems faithfully making their way to the polls, to proudly vote for him, just out of gratitude. (Not a reason to change one's vote, I realize, but that's probably the outcome, were he to do so.)

105. Are there that many dems in NE???
I live in Omaha, and I sometimes feel my husband and I are the only ones. Though I know that's not true. :)

I called earlier in the week, and again today after seeing the notice about Kos' post urging people to call. I took a little extra time (figured why not, since I'm a constituent who voted for him) and asked why he was voting for Alito. The staffer gave me the usual answer, and I told her that it really confused me how he could support Alito, knowing the record the good judge has on things like individual civil rights and executive power. I asked her to explain this to me, and she said she couldn't, but that she'd pass along my concerns. And then I did the "please support the filibuster, or abstain from the cloture vote" thing and that was all.

But I'm feeling pretty proud of myself. I NEVER called any of my representatives (except once regarding some adoption legislation) before hanging out with all you DU'ers. You have inspired me. :)

So do call! But I would recommend not even mentioning the abortion issue. You won't win with that one. Focus on the concerns about executive power and the story about the farmer and family that was evicted. We're a rural state, and these are things that he can take back to his constituents as reasons why he changed his vote, (if he does) and hopefully they are reasons that will be acceptable because they affect the people here.

Allen's voicemail box was full. Now the Capitol switchboard is constantly busy. Good news.

On edit: reached Allen's Herndon office, and Warner's direct line. Left messages on both. Told "make my day" Allen that if he votes for Alito, we will ruin his day this November.
