Just to keep my finger on the pulse of our national culture.

4. Bless you, sir.
It's such a simple celebration - just one small word, sincerely delivered: "Thanks!"
It really takes almost no time to be done person-to-person - and means a LOT.
No cards needed. No trees required. No costumes to rent. No muss, no fuss.

7. No, some of my fellow vets are buried there.
A bunch of us living vets go to the military section of the cemetery and have a little ceremony, then we go eat donuts.

Something I ardently wished for every day for 4 long years in the Marine Crotch.

18. You mean you weren't honored to 'serve' a nation ...
... that was respectful of and grateful for your service and took great pains, shouldering their responsbility to make sure your contribution wasn't wasted or exploited for narrow gain? A nation that recognized its sovereignty and were careful to oversee their elected representatives so the lives of people in service weren't destroyed?

Uh-huh. Me too.

21. You mean like when they asked to stick around to murder people?
I suppose I should have been grateful that they thought so highly of my skills as a marksman. But, ingrate that I was, (and still am), I found it downright insulting that they wanted to make me a murderer so LBJ could prove enhance his "anti-communist" credentials.

I got my first inkling of their plans for me in boot camp when some half-assed captain gave us one of those "Why We Fight" lectures and told us that we should be proud to have the opportunity to go and kill Cubans because Fidel was a dirty commie with a dirty beard.

20. going birdwatching - and keeping our vets in mind
My dad is a vet, my future father in law is a vet, one of my surviving uncles is a vet. My best friend is active duty.

Birdwatching will be bittersweet - one of my group's members died unexpectedly over the weekend. Her brother, who's a great guy, might come out with us. we're going to try and have a great day of birding in her memory.
