God that show is awful, and that Jill girl is an airhead. Who wants to hear airheaded liberals? We need smart guys like Thom Hartmann. God, they even discussed Paris Hilton the other day. Take it off, I can't stand it any more. No wonder Air America is tanking. Argghhhh!

2. I haven't heard them since they went to terrestrial radio
I'd suspected that Cenk not being able to curse anymore would bring things down a notch; but has it really gone that far downhill?

I was thinking, as I watched it, it's a safe bet that my teenage daughter and her friends have more intelligent conversations in the high school cafeteria.

6. Couldn't agree more. These people make Jerry Springer
look like a genius (for those who didn't like Jerry). They are unlistenable. I like to listen to the radio while at the computer. 12 to 3 Rush, 3 to 6 Randi at www.wjno.com. (West Palm Beach). Heard Ed Schultz the other night when TV was so bad. I think he came on around 7 pm.

7. on Jill...it really really really really pains me to say this:
Edited on Sat Dec-02-06 10:16 AM by hlthe2b
because as a progressive female, I like to support women trying to make a difference, young or old...but...

I've been cringing for weeks every time she speaks... First she goes on a tear pre-election how her generation doesn't vote and she wouldn't probably either, if she weren't on "this show..." She clearly seemed to be defending NOT VOTING....

She is so incredibly poorly informed and seemingly proud of it...:shrug:I remember her weighing in on the Atlanta story months ago about the nurse who was cited for a Bushit bumper sticker on her car. Jill had obviously not even read the piece and went on about how they were right for keeping rude language off cars because children could see them???? She was totally oblivious to the obvious fact that Bushit is not even a word, and that the woman was clearly harrassed because of her anti-Bush political views. Jill just totally discounted this as a possibility, even when it was very obvious...Damn, I just wanted to throw something at her... She just thought she was so damned cute, even though her male co-hosts were getting totally ticked at her for her "proud" ignorance and refusal to shut up, even when it was clear she hadn't read the story and didn't know the facts.

Worst though, is that she is proudly the stereotypical LA rich girl, who has not worked at ANYTHING and is just convinced that everyone wants to know all about her sex life and her assessment of her generation..

The only thing that makes it bearable is Ceng's very pointed way of shutting her up--generally so subtle that Jill is not smart enough, or aware enough to know she has just been efficiently smacked down. NOrmally I woud hate Ceng and Ben for doing this, since it seems on its face so sexist and rude, but anyone who listens to Jill for more than 30 seconds surely must be thanking C&B under their breath when they finally do "make it stop!"

As for the two guys by themselves, I have mixed feelings... I certainly don't live to listen to them in the morning... Damn it, give me back my Marc Maron and Morning Sedition!

11. I'm curious, how old is Jill anyway?
I'm always naturally suspicious anyway of anyone who claims to be "young, hip, smart AND passionate." (I hate their ads, or at least her part of them, as you can probably guess.)

17. About a week or so ago, one of the male Turks said he was going
to do something that would piss off women. Did you hear that? What was that about? I thought to myself, "Why do I have to hear a so called liberal guy say that when I can hear a right wing guy say it?"

What is the matter with the people who produce this show? To deliberately try to piss of women is STUPID.

30. I don't know.... I only half way listen anymore and may well...
be going back to NPR.... While Ceng (and probably Ben) certainy do have some tendencies that bug me, I'd have to see them doing so WITHOUT being egged on by Jill's irritating idiotic antics, before I'd judge them too harshly.

As to the earlier poster who asked her age: I think she is in her mid-late twenties.... She is not exactly serving either her generation (or progressive women in general, certainly).

Edited on Sat Dec-02-06 10:19 AM by fasttense
a bit silly and superficial. But sometimes their show can be very, very good. I'm hoping they will settle out on the good side. They certainly were not at their best yesterday. Even I found Jill to be silly. I winced when she was talking. But I did find the information the Paris and her sister do not have the Hilton fortune to be interesting. I wish they would have gone into more detail about the Hilton fortune. They were definitely off yesterday.

13. Agreed. I've tried to give that show a chance, but no mas.
It's just stream-of-consciousness babbling most of the time. And the sound of the one guy's voice is so grating, I can't listen to it. And Jill? Hopefully she's sharper than she sounds on air.

15. Not to be contrary, but I enjoy them
I don't always agree with them, but that's what makes interesting radio, IMO.

Cenk can get a little overbearing at times, but so can most radio hoists of that type, including Randi, Malloy, Seder, etc.

I like the fact that they challenge themselves, and challenge me, to think about things I believe in. It gets boring to hear someone who just repeats what I already believe. It's morte stimulating to hear people on the left discuss and argue about things.

As for Jill, I think she's a good stand in for many people in the public who aren't political junkies.

And I also like the fact that they don;t only talk politics, but get into cultural and personal issues too.

23. I agree with you about the Young Turks
But I wouldn't hold Hartmann up as an example of what we ought to have. He's a great and interesting writer but he's extremely annoying to listen to. He's totally full of himself, he's a lousy interviewer who is more interested in talking than letting his guests talk, and he's often clueless when it comes to Asian/Pacific Rim issues although that doesn't stop him from pontificating on them when he is trying to make a point.

I first listened to him two years ago. Or maybe it was three years ago. Couldn't have been much more than that because my partner and I moved back from Japan in '02, no it was '03 and it was a little after that so it must have been two years ago. Anyway, I was impressed for about 20 minutes or maybe 30, I don't know, I could be wrong, but at any rate it wasn't very long before I started to realize that he was a better read than a listen.

25. "No wonder Air America is tanking. Argghhhh!" Actually the Young Turks
are helping turn the ratings around. Like it or not, this is the kind of stuff most Americans want to hear on their drive to work. Talking about Paris Hilton is just the type of thing that will keep a lot of people tuned in. It's also a morning show and a good mix of gossip and politics is necessary to keep people tuned in. It's a little too fluffy for me but I understand exactly what Air America is thinking by putting the Young Turks on. Maybe not popular with DU but exactly the kind of show that will pull in ratings.

28. Hey, cool idea!

Thanks for the plug. And I agree with you about the Radio Tranquilizer. It's a right-wing gossip site with the idea that, if a rumor is printed enough times, it may just come true.

Not that I'm trashing the competition (though I don't feel I'm in competition, and people should read whatever they want or can), but Brian Baloney has a serious axe to grind, and also has a very unhealthy obsession with Al Franken.

Plus, that is the ugliest-looking blog I've ever seen.

32. They suck deeply. And blow, too.
Once in awhile they get a good discussion going, but it seems like mostly it's a lot of inane chatter about celebrities. And that Jill woman is awful -- giggling, silly, uninformed, evidently not too bright; she interjects dumb, irrelevant comments when the other two are at least trying to say something intelligent. Get the hook. I'd even rather have Jerry Springer back.

on Air America than no Air America at all, which could very well be the case in the near future. Malloy mentioned the other night that he expects AAR to be gone in a week or so, though I realize that he may have a certain axe to grind with their management; it certainly sounded like they don't have much time left.

38. The first time I heard them, they were awesome... Now? not so much
They filled in for Laura Flanders and they were great -- on topic, totally relevant and with lots of great new ways to talk about liberal causes. Now I think they just saved all their best material for that one show, because I have never heard a radio show with a lower signal-to-noise ratio.

The worst part is Cenk and Ben constantly trying to paint themselves as the two biggest studs in the universe. If either of these guys have been laid in the past year, it's probably been with each other.

Bad, bad show.

42. Sadly, it was still the best show on Sirius Left.
Alex Bennet, Lynn Samuels and the rest are far, far worse. Alex Bennet is a joke. I would get so pissed off in my car because he is supposed to be the morning drive-time host of liberal talk show and all I heard about was his damn girlfriend and every medical problem or scare he ever had. Horrible. He didn't have a clue about the day-to-day news or Democratic happenings. All just crappy banter with his right wing producer and schmo, Garrett. Who also happens to be the producer of the Lynn Samuels show. Garrett has possibly the most annoying voice ever imaginable. (wait, that actually belongs to Lynn Samuels, but Garrett is close behind). I've completely stopped listening to Sirius Left. Sucks even more because I bought Sirius two years ago specifically for Air America. Six months after that, they went exclusive on XM and they never even attempted to make Sirius Left viable by hiring better talent - actual liberal talent. Pathetic. Other than that, I do like the rest of the content. I just wish they had am improved progressive station.
