How ridiculous. Saddam was contained, unable to fly planes within his own borders. You can't be against the invasion of Iraq and against this administrations conduct of the occupation and say that it was a "good thing" to remove Saddam. If the Iraqi people chose not to overthrow his tyrannical butt, what makes us think that now that we have killed over 500,000 Iraqis, totally destroyed their country and historical relics and documents, that these people have the will to reconcile with each other let alone with the US and become a peaceful, thriving nation now? We have just fomented enemies for the next three generations and our children and grandchildren will pay the price.

No one can maintain credibility with me and say it was a good thing to remove Saddam while condemning what is going on in Iraq now. It just doesn't wash. It sounds like a political weasel statement.

1. He's one of the best fence sitters around.
Smith has made an art form of it. Alas, he will be re-elected again in 2008, and more politicians will follow his "lead."

3. Why
did he have any credibility with you in the first place?

And if you believe the next winning candidate will say "It was a bad thing to remove Saddam", I think you'll be disappointed.

5. He didn't have any to begin with. Repubs never had or will have...
any credibility. The only way Repubs can have "credibility" is to leave the party and repent their wrong doings. At that point, since you have repented your misdoings, you are no longer a Republican.

6. You should never give Gordon Smith credibility...
He's just "coming around" on Iraq now to save his ass from getting voted out of office in '08. Otherwise, he votes down the party lines whenever possible. He is neither credible or honorable - and hopefully he'll be unemployed come November 2008.

7. I live just north in Washington state
and although Smith is not my representative I can't help but be slightly involved with what happens in Oregon. This just one of the biggest "hurry cover my ass quick" moments I have ever witnessed. Smith has been in lock step with this administration from the start. It is very clear to my jaded eye that he was totally shocked by the elections, and baby the writing is on the wall. Where was his outrage when the two thousandth soldier was blasted by a road side bomb? Very opportunistic Mr. Smith. Just too little, too late. Way too late to convince me that you are doing anything but trying to save yourself in 2008.
