Elizabeth is a great asset to John. She talks about being sympathetic to military families (her Dad was Navy and fought in WWII, Korea and VietNam) and she very cleverly slips in that she was protesting the VietNam war while her Dad was active.
"You can support the troops and not the policy"
John is also very clever--consciously or not--in being truthful about not being at the place where he can support gay marriage, although he has no trouble with civil unions. Clever, why? Because his answer will resonate with all the Southern Baptists (which is how he was raised)who will identify with his discomfort and like that he is not trying to push something they can't understand.
John did, however miss a great chance to talk about the opportunity cost of the Iraq War and how all those billions could be spent to solve problems at home. He needs to be more alert to those questions.
All in all, a very good interview.
