1. Let's see-- 2400 years ago today
Rome was a republic, and Julius Caesar was still about 350 years into the future.

I'll pass on that ionic silver.

2. At roughly that time in history...
... Sparta was seizing control of Greece, overturning Greek democracy and instituting a culture of militarism in the region.

3. I'm guessing the end of Athenian democracy.
Anti-democratic factions were tearing Athens apart after Pericles was gone. Athens was fighting all kinds of wars--needlessly. Since we haven't had anyone like Pericles around here, that can't be it.

5. Not far wrong, I'd guess...
... but, perhaps the 2400 years ago is just a rough guideline, and ionic silver is a clue. Ionia (as established by the Athenians) figured prominently in the Peloponnesian War, and it was around this time that Ionians came to fight King Cyrus of Persia (now Iran), according to Thucydides. Maybe?

4. The end of the first democracy the world had seen? Except there
were slaves. And women didn't vote.

So - yeah - that's about right. America was like that for a long time.
