OMG American Legion backs the surge
They have not been fighting for returning troops. They are fighting the ACLU and now this. Any Vet who stay with this org. is out of their mind. I mean that too. How can any Veterans Org. back this move when returning troops are being denied health care. Instead of PTSD discharges they are using PD discharges. But where is the Legion fighting the ACLU. The American Legion claims the ACLU is a danger to this Country. In this Vets opinion they are.

3. Are there any Iraq War vets in the American Legion?
Or are these the old Swift Boat Vets and others from prior wars? I get the impression that the American Legion is an "old" organization and its members may be out of touch with how the troops fighting this "war" feel about it.

5. Send those old fucks to fight
I'm a life member of Paralyzed Veterans of America and Disabled American Veterans and both of those organizations have been very critical about how this administration has been treating veterans. The American Legion is nothing but a bunch of senile veterans with too much time on their hands.

7. More from their home page. They also supported the war in Iraq.

Idiots. Let them old fools put on a uniform and go then.

Here is their official statement on the initial war resolution. They seem like a RW front to me.

10. I agree
I won't join the Legion until something with them changes. I am a veteran too and if I did join, they'd throw me out as soon as the talk turned to politics........... :)

11. Geezers who still resent the VietNam vets and long for the days of Nixon.
No doubt hate Cindy Sheehan and view any opposition to Bush as treason and disrespect for the troops.

14. That is disgusting..
I remember frequenting an American Legion bar...the only one that I know of...my dad was a member alcoholic there. I've been to lots of VFW's, but none compare to the sound of silence echoed in that bar. The stark memories of those times compared to the non-stop cheer-leading for more war is a sick irony.

15. A fucked up organization if there ever was one
I went to several meetings in the 70's and got the cold shoulder from all the old WWII guys. Later my son's grandfather-in-law tried to talk me into joining but I said no. Our local post is goin down the shitter because the old timers are dying off and Vietnam and later vets are not participating.

16. Vet-Pac has just come out against this surge
Browny has made a hell of a statement. Saying any Veteran who backs this Surge has to be suffering from PTSD or worse.

21. The American legion for the most part are a bunch
of WWII and Korean War drunks. They are so desperate for members they have to recruit "Sons of Legion" that never even served to pay the bills. They sent me applications for years and finally I filled out the papers to join and they wanted my DD214 to prove I was in the military and they also wanted a sponsor in the local Post. I asked why I needed a sponsor when they have members that didn't even serve wnen I am a veteran. Well the answer was they don't want the "wrong people".

24. They're thinking of the America of the past (the older ones).
They listen to rightwing radio. Sad to say they know not what they back. They back the end of what so many generations fought to protect.

28. I'm sure you remember the the American Legion has always been a pro-war lobby,
at least since Vietnam, but I confident that before then as well. Why? I'm not sure if it is some sort of deluded thinking (I had to do it, I am good, therefore war is good; or maybe I went through shit and everyone else should have to also), or just manipulation by corporate/imperialist funders. it is one reason VVAW became the strongest membership org for vets of that era.
