Mamas and Papas Member Dead at 66
(01-19) 13:30 PST MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (AP) --

Denny Doherty, one-quarter of the 1960s folk-rock group the Mamas and the Papas, known for their soaring harmony on hits like "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday," died Friday at 66.

His sister Frances Arnold said the singer-songwriter died at his home in Mississauga, a city just west of Toronto, after a short illness.

The group burst on the national scene in 1966 with the top 10 smash "California Dreamin'." The Mamas and the Papas broke new ground by having women and men in one group at a time when most singing groups were unisex. John Phillips, the group's chief songwriter; his wife, Michelle; and another female vocalist, Cass Elliot, teamed with Doherty.

"Monday, Monday" hit No. 1 on the charts and won the band a Grammy for best contemporary group performance. Among the group's other songs were "I Saw Her Again Last Night,""Go Where You Wanna Go,""Dancing Bear," and versions of "I Call Your Name" and "Dedicated to the One I Love."

1. A great singer.
His vocal break in the second verse of "No Salt On Her Tail" gets me every time.

RIP, Denny.

5. A really sweet guy.
He hosted the "Theodore Tugboat" children's television series that was produced here in Halifax. He had a real gentleness about him that made him perfect for the role.

Sail on, Harbour Master.

9. First Abbas' strongman, now the Mamas and the Papas??
What next?

It looks like the pop music world is in utter disarray. :P

(Seriously though, I loved the Ms and Ps. By the way, the movie that must have established some sort of record for repeated use of "California Dreamin'" is Wong Kar-Wai's Chungking Express)

Denny Doherty is a great guy! He loved Cass with all his heart and
considered her his best friend in the world. He just was never in love
with her in the romantic sense. He was wise enough to be honest with
her. Their great friendship did not end with Denny's rejection of Cass'
marriage proposal. The rejection did make Cass see reality and allowed
her to get on with her very short life.

http://www.findadeath.com/Deceased/e/Cass%20Elliot/cass_elliot.htm

Also, E's "True Hollywood Story" did a special on her, and spoke about the love Cass had for Denny, and how Denny broke her heart by having an affair with Michelle.

she actually did propose to him.

see also in Denny's own words:

35. ... and I was "in love" with Mama Cass. (Gawd, this makes me feel old.)
"All the leaves are brown ..."

Sure ... Michelle Phillips was "hotter" by most standards. (I've never seen much in her daughter.) But I adored Mama Cass Eliot. "And no one's getting fat except Mama Cass."

A really great pop song. I don't see Justin "Half Baked"
or Beyonce doing anything near as good.

Ba-da ba-da-da-da

Monday, monday (ba-da ba-da-da-da)
So good to me (ba-da ba-da-da-da)
Monday mornin, it was all I hoped it would be
Oh monday mornin, monday mornin couldnt guarantee (ba-da ba-da-da-da)
That monday evenin you would still be here with me

Monday, monday, cant trust that day
Monday, monday, sometimes it just turns out that way
Oh monday mornin you gave me no warnin of what was to be
Oh monday, monday, how could you leave and not take me

Every other day (every other day), every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever monday comes, but whenever monday comes
A-you can find me cryin all of the time

Monday, monday (ba-da ba-da-da-da)
So good to me (ba-da ba-da-da-da)
Monday mornin, it was all I hoped it would be
Oh monday mornin, monday mornin couldnt guarantee
That monday evenin you would still be here with me

Every other day, every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever monday comes, but whenever monday comes

15. One of my all time favorite voices
along with Paul Stuckey from Peter, Paul and Mary.

The Mamas and the Papas were such a tragic group. I saw a documentary about them once and it was so sad to see them spiraling downward.

20. A girlfriend wrote me after I joined the Army and said the song
"Monday Monday" made her cry because it was a Monday when I left for basic training.

The Mamas And The Papas

Song: Monday, Monday

Monday Monday, so good to me,
Monday Monday, it was all I hoped it would be
Oh Monday morning, Monday morning couldn't guarantee
That Monday evening you would still be here with me.

Monday Monday, can't trust that day,
Monday Monday, sometimes it just turns out that way
Oh Monday morning, you gave me no warning of what was to be
Oh Monday Monday, how yould cou leave and not take me.

Every other day, every other day,
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes, but whenever Monday comes
You can find me cryin' all of the time

Monday Monday, so good to me,
Monday Monday, it was all I hoped it would be
Oh Monday morning, Monday morning couldn't guarantee
That Monday evening you would still be here with me.

Every other day, every other day,
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes, but whenever Monday comes
You can find me cryin' all of the time

Monday Monday, ...

She was always good at twisting that knife.

23. Safe in My Garden...
Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 06:01 PM by Contrary1
My favorite Mamas and Papas tune.

Somehow it seems an appropriate song for now.

Safe in my garden,
An ancient flower blooms.
And the scent from its nature
Slowly squares my room;
And its perfume being such
that it's causing me to swoon.

Could it be we were hot-wired
Late one night while very tired?
They stole our minds and thought we'd never know it.
With a bottle in each hand; too late to try to understand.
We don't care where it lands - we just throw it.

When you go out in the street,
So many hassles with the heat;
No one there can fill your desire.
Cops out with the megaphones,
Telling people stay inside their home.
Man, can't they see the world's on fire?

Somebody take us away...take us away...

Rest in Peace Denny.

And today would've been Janis Joplin's sixty-fourth birthday, if she'd lived.

30.  I'm watching my entire generation die off
I feel so old and I am old . We are not lasting as long as my parents generation .

All of the older groups have lost members it seems .

There are two beatles left , two BeeGees left , the band has lost two . I could go on but it is so sad .
