4. As in life...
...just as Coretta would have wanted it to be.

I know she spoke with a lot of people via phone as long as she could.

Perhaps she made her wishes known to a few strategic people.

14. She gave her life, turning a public ceremony after she has passed
'to the cause' would be so easy in comparison. And so joyful!!

5. Getting our message out.
It was really great seeing our Democrats using the funeral to get our message out. It was really great seeing *ush sitting there having to take it all in. The look on his and Laura's face was priceless.

9. And remember how breathless they all were to report the bump.
The editorial cartoons at the time were downright hysterical, some of the best ever, like the one with bush slapping a bush/cheney bumper sticker on the back of the hearse.

I wish someone had created a toon depicting the hearse as a trampoline with bush jumping on it and yelling "Wheeeee, I'm going up!" :7

17. When Bill Clinton took the podium..... the applause just kept going.
and going and going. Bill started getting teared up. It was such genuine admiration and appreciation.

Those assembled for Corretta Scott King's funeral applauded Bill Clinton because despite his disgraceful exit from office, he is the last President who actually treated people equally regardless of race etc... It isn't artificial with him.

His talk about Corretta was so simple and meaningful. He said that if Corretta had turned away and said she had given too much to the movement, paid the ultimate price and went home and raised her family, no one would have blamed her. Instead she chose to go to Memphis and help the workers who were on strike, back into the heat of battle.

Then he spoke to wondering how the children of Corretta feel during all of this. How hard it is for them to live up to their parent's legacy. He mentioned that he'd been in their place recently having lost his mom.

It was really more like the talk a friend of the family would give. Very simple and straightforward.

I was at work watching it on Fox and I still cried. (The work TV is rigged.)

20. Terry Moran got it right on Nightline, bless him
I skipped past Hardball earlier in the day and some dippy middle aged blond talking head was complaining about the funeral being "political" -- I believe she was flapping her lips for the sake of sounding clever, rather than even meaning it. She also mention Paul Wellstone's funeral. I moved on quickly, fuming.

Terry Moran's observation was that considering her life's work, the tributes and tone were exactly right.

What I saw were people carrying her work forward by speaking truth to power. I'm glad I caught as much as I did -- I shed many tears.

21. It was beautiful.
Both Kings knew that spirituality is the highest form of politics. Their lives made republicans anxious. No surprise that their funerals would, too.
