I'm entirely serious. The media are doing their jobs very well. Their jobs are to manage information so as to pump the bottom lines of the parent corporations, prop up the Bush administration and push the official doctrine, promote divisive wedge issues, etc.

The fact that Bush even made it into the running in 2000, the fact that statesmen like Gore and Dean became laughingstocks to the general public ("Invented the internet;" "I have a scream," etc.), the fact that nobody seems to know or care that the Bill of Rights is being systematically shredded; the fact that the masses equate morality with anti-gay, anti-abortion fundamentalism; the fact that most people are kept in thrall to their terror and rage; the fact that anything other than the official 9-11 story is viewed as a wacko conspiracy theory; the fact thatglobal warming is viewed as a "controversial theory--" all these facts and many more prove how effective the mass media are in doing their jobs.

In the face of all this coordinated propaganda, the fact that the majority of Americans now oppose the war and are coming to realize that Bush is an idiot is absolutely amazing. The fact that, despite the best efforts of the propaganda machine, Gore and Kerry secured the majority of the intended vote (if not, at least in 2004, the counted vote)speaks amazingly well of the sagacity of average Americans.

2. It's much deeper than that.
The media are the tools, and the property, of the Overclass. The Bushies currently have the contract from the Overclass to run the government. That contract can be ended if the Bushies stop erving the interests of their masters. If the media get the right orders, they could turn on the Bushies & bring them down in an instant.

3. One nice thing
is that the constant "have they gone too darned far?" business about the King funeral results in the most wonderful film clips being played over and over again. It's almost like it gets far more play than if someone in the media wanted to slap the administration directly.

However, that one nice thing does not change the fact that the corporate media are in the same business that McDonalds and Burger King are in: tricking people into thinking that the product they sell is healthy and fun to consume.
