Ill. Governor Confused by 'Daily Show' Bit
From Associated Press
February 23, 2006 6:27 PM EST
ST. LOUIS - Gov. Rod Blagojevich wasn't in on the joke. Blagojevich says he didn't realize "The Daily Show" was a comedy spoof of the news when he sat down for an interview that ended up poking fun at the sometimes-puzzled Democratic governor.

- snip -

The interview focused on his executive order requiring pharmacies to fill prescriptions for emergency birth control.

Interviewer Jason Jones pretended to stumble over Blagojevich's name before calling him "Governor Smith." He urged Blagojevich to explain the contraception issue by playing the role of "a hot 17-year-old" and later asked if he was "the gay governor."-

At one point in the interview, a startled Blagojevich looked to someone off camera and said, "Is he teasing me, or is that legit?"

7. He is also the most endangered Democratic Governor in the nation
with very low approval ratings and up for re-election in November.

11. He Would Be If This Wasn't Illinois
The GOOP in this state is where I hope the national party to be in a couple years. The Ryan trial is going full tilt with new headlines every day...the GOOP has only one statewide office holder and none of the challengers to Judy Barr-Topinka has enough of a base to overcome her...and she will get destroyed by Blago in a Democratic wave through the Chicago area this fall.

Yep, Blago isn't popular cause he's had to do what many other governors have had to...deal with the financial shortfalls that were cause when the regime in Washington cut taxes and other funding that took a big budget surplus under Ryan and turned it into a big one by the time Blago got to town. He hasn't helped his cause by letting cronies run the show...but, unfortunately, I can't think of a governor in my lifetime who hasn't operated that way...it's just to what degree as several have ended up in jail.

Blago's not popular, but his primary challenger...Edwin Eisendrath (a Chicago progressive) is still far behind, but has been running a lot of TV ads lately...maybe that will raise his visibility.

12. And the most dangerous, in a way.
The #1 asset the GOP has to repair the damage done by the Keyes fiasco is Rod Blagojevich. He's a moby win for them, because he does almost as good a job as one of their own would in making the Democratic victories in the legislature pointless, and because he's nominally a Democrat, the messes that fail to be cleaned up will become associated with the Democrats whether they're actually caused by Democratic party policy or not. (Except to the extent with which "nominating Rod Blagojevich" can be seen as a party policy.)

Which is the point I keep trying to get the "centrists" to understand: in the long run, winning offices with compromise candidates is a bad thing, because the Republicans are wrong. Isn't that what this is all about? I mean, it's not a football game, right, folks? We're not just rooting against the GOP because they're not wearing our colors; we oppose them because they're doing the wrong thing. So for a Democrat to promise a "move to the center", it's basically a promise to not fix some mistakes.

The end result is that they both fail to create any impression that Democrats know the right answers, and help smother the essential, crucial lesson Americans need to learn, that Republicanism is inherently mistaken.

8. blago is a twit
after one of the most blatantly corrupt repug administrations in illinois history- with roots in the previous to it repug administration- he's bound and determined (with the help of the media) to be a one-term democratic governor.

9. Honestly, I'd not be sad to see him go.
If it didn't mean Topinka is Springfield (of course, maybe she'd actually live in Springfield).

10. Topinka Would Be Better?
Maybe for comic relief. Watching her hide from her Repugnican challengers the other night was hillarious.

Blago's shown time and again, he's not the brightest tool in the shed and it's more a sad implication of the state of the Democratic party in the State of Illinois. I'll be voting for Eisendrath in the primary, but will probably hold the nose and vote for Blago in November.
