Jack Murtha:"We've Lost the Hearts and Minds of the Iraqi People"

We've Lost the Hearts and Minds of the Iraqi People

I've said for the last few months it's a civil war and our troops are targets caught in the middle. If we had 100 Iraqis and seven Americans killed in the last couple days, that's just an indication of how bad things have gotten: we've lost the hearts and minds of the people.

They now have elected officials, it was their election, we've got to let them know we're going to get out, we're not going to be occupiers, and they have to settle this themselves.

5. even though I never
personally had any expectations - I did see a documentary by an Iraqi recently that showed the POV that many Iraqis expected things to be better after Saddam was removed - before it became clear (to them) that the US military was not leaving.

3.  mixed feelings
No kidding on losing the hearts and minds, and
no kidding on having to get out but we've
destroyed their country. We've destroyed our
country too for that matter, and we have an
obligation to repair it all.

And that includes New Orleans and the Gulf
Coast!

We need a big Marshal Plan. Get the people
mobilized in our own repairs. No corporations
skimming off the top.

The only problem with what you're saying is that
as Murtha himself pointed out earlier, our staying (even to "fix" things) is a HUGE provocation: WE are part of the problem and ONLY "redeploying," as Murtha puts it, can in any way help that.

4. Repairing Iraq is a Pipedream.
The Billions for that has been wasted and is gone. $9 billion never accounted for. The Neo Fascist Regime of America has no intention of rebuilding Iraq and never did. It is time to end the Occupation. Bring the troops and Mercs back to America and rebuild the Gulf Coast.

7. Do you think
They will abandon the 14 military bases and the largest embassy in the world they are building?
