Khephra - one year later
One year ago this Sunday (the 8th), we lost a member of DU, Scott Lowery, known to DUer's as Khephra.

When I originally joined DU, I focused mainly on posting to LBN - I was much more of a news junky then. What I found out what that even though I scoured what I thought were relatively obscure news sources for pertinent articles of political interest, no matter what time of day or night, there was an 80% chance that this other user named Khephra had already posted it first. China Times, IndyMedia, StarsAndStripes, Sify news, whatever - chances are that Khephra posted it first.

Khephra had some movement disability - I'm not exactly sure what - that kept him confined mainly to home, and so he made DU his world. Day and night, he WAS Latest Breaking News. He made LBN the powerhouse resource that it was, and a reference for thousands upon thousands of people looking for, literally, the Latest Breaking News.

It was with a shock that the moderators started receiving alerts on a thread entitled "Khephra is dead" posted under Khephra's name (it turned out to have been posted by his mother). Quick calls to administrators - who in turned called Scott's home - verified that indeed, it was true. At 37, Scott died at his keyboard, doing what he always did - looking up news items and posting for LBN.

I think it's fitting that at least on the first anniversary of his death that we remember Scott and all he did for DU, and maybe we can have enough responses by Sunday to pass this thread onto his mother and let her know that one year later, DU has not forgotten.

Thank you, Scott, for all that you have done.

2. What a touching post.
I did not know Khephra, since I haven't been here that long, but I was moved by this remembrance post.

Blessings to Scott and his family.

7. When I first joined DU, I was fascinated with LBN.
I never knew him, except that he seemed to be on top of everything going on in the world, and in world communities. It was a little intimidating, but mostly comforting. I wish I could have known him.

And it wasn't just his political stuff. We loved him because he was a kind and caring soul. And a friend to many.

My heart grieves for his Mom. This must be tough for her. But she should know he was much loved.

Every time I sign on, I look for him. I know he won't be there, but I still do it.

I miss him.

no translation necessary.

You know what? I have noticed that LBN doesn't move nearly as fast as it used to, not at all as fast as GD. LBN threads now have a fighting chance of staying up most of a whole day. Now I think I've figured out why: No Kef to keep feeding fresh meat into the LBN sausage grinder. :(

18. Was thinking about him earlier today, thinking it must be about a year now
and how I still miss his posts. He kept us all up to speed on the Latest from everywhere.

Hope his soul is at peace, knowing how his efforts to make people aware have snowballed. That the junta is in so much trouble today is part of his doing. He got people to notice what was going on. He showed us the sources to use because US MSM was not doing its job.

He opened doors and turned on the lights. That the cockroaches are scurrying now is testament to the value of what he did to help wake America. Khephra and his all-seeing eye were so instrumental in making people aware at a time so much power was exerted to keep everyone asleep.

Hope his soul is at peace. Hope he knows how many were inspired to action because of the education they got from his posts.

Hope he knows we miss him, and carry him with us as we continue.

21. I'm a reasonably adept information junkie myself--
--and am absolutely nowhere near being in Kephra's league. Hardly anybody was--the nearest print journalism equivalent was probably I.F. Stone. I'm a comparative latecomer and didn't have the personal connections with him that many others did, but I still miss the guy a lot. He was one of a kind, with a real gift for picking out the significant needles in the information haystack.

He was such a nice person and helped me through some newbie things about how the board worked. His blinking eye of Horus and love of fantasy and Sci-Fi also connected with me. I miss him as well as other DU'ers who passed last year and who made great contributions here.

26. For Kephra
I lurked for quite awhile on DU before I joined in May of 2005, but the one person whose posts I ALWAYS looked for were Keph's. He was amazing in his ability to find news that was important for us to know, and no one has come close to his ability in this area (and no offense meant to anyone posting items in LBN). Reading his posts exponentially increased my knowledge of all the issues we are dealing with, and for that, I will be forever grateful.

When I read that he had died, it hurt so much, for even though I had never met him, never even exchanged a PM with him, he had become an important part of my life.

R.I.P. Scott. Your presence was a blessing, and your influence lives on in DU. O8)

35. Kheph was a one-man news service for DUers
I remember days when Kheph's posts were the only ones on the LBN first page. All day long. He was incredible. And generous. Posting articles and commentary on live news so cuberats could be fed, organizing multiple threads in order to follow speeches live. Scouring the internet for news. He should have worked in the press room at some major news organization earning big bucks. Instead, he gave it to us all for free.

I wish I could have hugged him. I wish he was here to hug today.

He would have so loved seeing the Chimp go down.

36. I miss you, Kef
Not only was Kef great at finding interesting news, he was a kind and interesting man. I never saw Kef post a negative post or attack anyone. Even during some of the primary battles, Kef was a voice of reason. He was a passionate and early supporter of Howard Dean and would have loved the recent fundraising report and the positive response from state parties. I wish he could see the news today with Fitzmas, Cunningham, and Abramof. I truly believe that not only did Kef influence DU but all the liberal bloggers. He posted information that many others would never have known. He also set a standard to not just post innuendo and gossip but to post facts. RIP, Kef.

62. He was a great guy and DU isn't the same without him.
He brought sanity, humor, humility and a staggering array of interests. I was so sad the week he died, I felt like I'd lost a brother.

I'm so sorry he didn't get to see the turning of the tide that he worked so hard to bring about.

RIP Scott.

68. The outpouring of love and respect for Khephra here at DU
was amazing. A contingent of DUers including Skinner attended his memorial, and Plaid Adder wrote a heartfelt piece about the service and about the special community and place that is Democratic Underground.

Thanks, Tab, for taking time out to remember Scott. He truly epitomized the very best of DU, and is very sorely missed.

72. Sweet Bird
Out on some borderline,
some mark of in-between,
I lay down golden in time
and woke up vanishing.

Sweet bird, you are
briefer than a falling star.
All these vain promises on beauty jars--
Somewhere with your wings on time
you must be laughing.

Behind our eyes,
calendars of our lives
circled with compromise.
Sweet bird of time and change,
you must be laughing.
Up on your feathers laughing.

Golden in time...
cities under the sand.
Power, ideals and beauty
fading in everyone's hand.
Give me some time!
I feel like I'm losing mine,
out here on this horizon line
with the earth spinning
and the sky forever rushing.

No one knows--
they can never get that close.
Guesses at most.
Guesses based on what each set of time and change is touching.

93. Memories ...
He would have been thrilled to know how much he meant to all of us -- he was so unassuming that he never would have just 'knew' how important he was.

I like to remember the goofy things we did and talked about, the devious chuckle, those big worldly-wise eyes, and how - like you said - he was so forthcoming about his flaws without using them as an excuse.

My favorite Kef memories:
The first time we talked on the phone, and realized that we lived within about 5 miles of each other. 'It was like Ohmigod!'

Going to 'Gangs of New York' and commenting to each other during the movie about hot guys/chicks in the theater.

'Political Strategizing' over Ice Cream Sundaes.

Organizing a welcome and meeting Howard Dean here in Indy in May 2003.

Seeing him so full of pride and driving thru downtown with the windows open and Marilyn Manson CRANKED, hootin' and singing along, after our fourth (or fifth?) Dean Meetup was attended by nearly 60 people. (The first Dean Meetup was 4 of us.)

124. What a heartfelt tribute.
I really felt Kef's presence in this thread. I had been lurking on DU since 2000, and since day one he was the reason I fell in love with this website. Khephra had lbn on fire. I took a hiatus for short while and when I returned, there was something eerily different about DU. Eventually I discovered that we lost him. I never knew what exactly happened until reading this thread. Thanks. R.I.P. Khephra

125. Sweet Scott, You and your great sense of humor are truly missed
I started posting after the 2000 selection and found a wonderful community. Khephra, or Scott as I now know was an enduring part of LBN, but also if I got into a heated discussion he was always there to back me up. I remember laughing out loud at some of his sardonic replies, we seemed to share the same sense of humor as well as our take on issues. I don't post as often as I used to, I'm much busier these days, but that light in the window that is DU helped me get thru so much of this tragedy on our nation, as well as getting thru such a blow to the stomach as losing Scott. My heart is with his family, who must be wonderful people to have raised such a sweet and intelligent person.

And we have since lost two other beloved and high profile DUers. I agree, Khephra was LBN. He was plugged into the world and brought us so much of what was important and made the world tick. The fact that he is still so terribly missed and remembered with such love reflects the impact that he had on this board and on all of our lives. My best to Momma Khephra, who must be having a pretty rough day. I just hope that this thread is a small comfort to her, to know how well Scott was thought of and that he's still a very real presence on this board and still in all of our thoughts.O8)

I’m not sure what I can adequately express in words about how I felt about Kef –words will never be adequate to describe how much Kef meant to me and how much I valued his wonderful personality, generosity of spirit and the compassion, warmth, friendliness and kindness that he consistently displayed on this forum and in my personal dealings with him. I miss seeing him on this forum, reading his posts and interacting with him. I greatly valued his presence here on DU and his wonderful contributions to LBN and all the other forums that he posted in. He had the ability to make you feel welcome and make you feel special. Scott truly was an amazing person –the depth of his personality, friendship and dedication to the progressive cause made a deep impact on me and I consider myself privileged and blessed to have had the opportunity of knowing him (even if it was online) and gaining some insight into the type of person that he was.

Rest in peace Kef. May you take comfort in knowing that you touched the hearts and lives of so many around the world through your personality and through your wonderful contributions to the progressive cause. May you find peace, happiness, love and spiritual fulfilment on the other side. The world was a better place for having you in it, even if it was only for too brief a period of time
