Darwin Award nominee...
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12156634/

VENTURA, Calif. - Part of a teacher's hand was blown off when a 40 mm round of ammunition the instructor used as a paperweight on his desk exploded in his classroom.

Robert Colla struck the round with an object Monday afternoon while teaching 20 to 25 students at the Ventura Adult Education Center.

Part of Colla's right hand was severed and he suffered severe burns and minor shrapnel wounds to his forearms and torso, fire Capt. Tom Weinell said. No one else was injured.

1. Was the teacher unable to reproduce as a result?
If not, then not a Darwin award nominee.

3. no - he would be a nominee because you actually have to die to win

We salute the improvement of the human genome
by honoring those who remove themselves from it.
Of necessity, this honor is generally bestowed posthumously.

6. Um, it doesn't say you have to be dead...
... And maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought the point of the Darwin awards was the pruning of the genetic tree. If the genetic tree isn't pruned, then you can't be a nominee.

Here are two ways the genetic tree is NOT pruned:

(a) If you've ALREADY had kids, or
(b) If you're still able to reproduce

Maybe I'm totally off on this...

7. "Of necessity, this honor is generally bestowed posthumously"
Yes it does. They have 'removed' their genes, thus have helped mankind. Get it?!
;-)

8. "generally" is not the same as "always"... it just isn't...
And their genes have NOT been removed if they die but their kids live on.

Get it?

It's a moot question anyway - just looked it up, and according to wiki, it's just the person themselves who has to die - says nothing about reporoduction.

That means two things: (a) I was wrong about them, and (b) "Darwin award" is a substantial misnomer for what they're talking about.

10. I take back my admission of mistakenness...
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 01:22 PM by BlooInBloo
Just got it from the horse's mouth...

"So how are the Darwin Awards actually determined?

Nominees significantly improve the gene pool by eliminating themselves from the human race in an obviously stupid way. They are self-selected examples of the dangers inherent in a lack of common sense, and all human races, cultures, and socioeconomic groups are eligible to compete. Actual winners must meet the following criteria:

Reproduction
Out of the gene pool: dead or sterile.
Excellence
Astounding misapplication of judgment.
Self-Selection
Cause one's own demise.
Maturity
Capable of sound judgment.
Veracity
The event must be true. "

So I was right about the death thing - you DON'T have to be dead in order to be a nominee.

It doesn't, so far as I can see, say anything about having kids already tho... So I think I'm still wrong about that...

But as for the OP: is the teacher dead? (I thought not) Is the teacher sterile? (I thought not) Correction on these plz?

4. And a student was expelled at another school for turning in his knife
A teacher can have ammo but a student who was honest about his mistake.

What the F was this guy thinking? He could have killed or injured students.
