KATIE COURIC VERSUS AMY GOODMAN
By Russell Mokhiber and Robert Weissman

We haven't done the poll, but our guess is that most Americans recognize
the name Katie Couric.

And they wouldn't know Amy Goodman from a hole in the wall.

<snippage>

Couric gets more ink than Goodman in the mainstream press.

That's because Couric plays by the rules of the game.

Goodman doesn't.

1. We'd have to have real democracy in this country for Amy Goodman!
Our democracy is bought off and centralized in the elite's hands. Unfortunately great journalists like Amy don't get the publicity they deserve!

4. American Journalism is basically dead.
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 11:41 PM by joemurphy
We used to have people like Edward R. Murrow, Eric Sevareid, William R. Shirer, I. F. Stone, Walter Cronkite, Jakob Riis, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Ernie Pyle, Walter Lippman, Upton Sinclair, Hunter Thompson, Studs Terkel, and H. L. Mencken.

Now we have Rita Cosby, Wolf Blitzer, Sean Hannity, and Tweety.

17. It's morphing into something different
Non-functioning things often fall the way side in just about any dynamic moving structure. The news as we used to know it is dead but there is a very large undertone of information that is bubbling up from everywhere. When centralized news only serves the needs of the central it ends up not being news

5. Unfair comparison...
Goodman is a journalist, while Couric really isn't...does anybody really think Couric is a journalist, other than her and her employers.

Real journalists have always been few and far between.

8. Yeah, it's all about the $$$
HMMM, most people, even here on DU, so far as I've noticed don't even have access to Democracy Now! or if they do, they don't watch, or listen. I admit, I record the show every day. Do I watch it every day? No. My Bad.

But to say it's an unfair comparison is to admit defeat, IMO. Never will the Repukes beat me down.

6. Katie doesn't play the game:
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 11:45 PM by kenny blankenship

She cheerleads the players and blows them on the busride home.

(notice the bending over backward in the pic? What a flexible spine. She's still got it I hear.)

7. Amy Goodman is a real professional.

Democracy Now is a great show.

Compare how much research and work goes into that show compared to the usual perky gloppy garbage on the Today show.

Goodman is in a diffeent league than Katie freakin Couric.

CBS has completely lost credibility with me for naming Couric a news anchor. Pathetic.

13. Thanks for someone finally saying what I've been saying the last few days!

Finally someone looks to compare Katie to a REAL news anchor and THE first solo real news woman anchor! Amy might not be on one of the "big three" networks, nor does she try to look like she should be in Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, but she has what exactly is needed to be the model news anchor, man OR woman, of the various television and radio news outlets today.

And for those who feel that Katie's letting a camera go up her colon makes her some admirable anchor person, I would direct you to this video of her interview with Howard Dean to show as an example of how she just regurgitates Republican talking points instead of her own thoughtful questions in the fashion that Amy would, and Dean, as a smart interviewee calls her out on the carpet for it, especially at the end of this interview taking issue with her adamant "Republican spoonfed" assertions that Democrats were also part of the Abramoff scandal, which was RW spin BS!

This is the difference between corporate media and REAL news media...

18. For those who think it's about appearance: 3 words - Katrina Vanden Heuvel
If this were an issue of appearance, Katrina would be on the teeeveeee every day.

Couric is a shameless rethug. (eg: NSA spying on Americans, no big deal -- especially to patriots.)

19. Excellent point
Katrina is not only smart, she's very attractive. But, alas, she's a liberal. Can't have that, now can we? :grr:

20. BTW - I have to throw my two cents in about the Edit
It's an Op-Ed piece, not a news piece. Be-that-as-it-may . . . whatever.

Here's the point the writers were tying to make:

Amy Goodman and Democracy Now are what Edward Murrow professed
television could become.

Katie Couric and the CBS Evening News represent what he feared it would
become.

Good night.

Good luck to Amy Goodman and Democracy Now.
