DU .."Dental Implant Candidates" and I know there are "some of us."
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 08:39 PM by KoKo01
What are you guy's going to do when your "trusty Family Dentist" says..."Sorry Joe/Jane....you are going to NEED AN IMPLANT...and I'm sending you over to DOCTOR G...who is the "best in the business."

What do DU'ers REALLY KNOW...about "IMPLANTS?"

 (What are the questions you would ask?)

two in my lower jaw. I've had one in my top front tooth for about 7-8 years (broke the tooth as a kid, went through various caps and a gold post until the root broke).

So far, so good. One of the two I just had didn't "take" because there wasn't enough bone in the jaw, so they redid it with a matrix and positioned it slightly differently and it meshed fine. (One was done for a BABY tooth that finally had its roots dissolve after 52 years and the other is to replace a tooth whose old root canal developed a leak. After a repair that tooth was yanked and I had a bridge between the baby tooth and the back tooth...until the baby tooth croaked RIP)

In a few short weeks I'll actually have two lower teeth on the one side of my mouth!

4. My implant tale of woe...
I had one done and it became infected (VERY painful). Two courses of increasingly powerful antibiotics later, the infection was cured, but the implant failed. So...he re-implanted and it became infected again. This time, however, they used the "good stuff" right off and the implant took.

All-in-all I wouldn't do it again - but my dentist swears mine is an unusual case.

5. I am almost done with the process of getting one
One of my front teeth had to be removed - the root and the bone were broken. I got a bone graft and then a post put in, and the last step will be screwing the implant onto the post. I have been waiting until after the first of the year for my dental benefits to refresh, since there's a yearly max on dental benefits.

If you are not experiencing a great deal of bone loss due to some other condition, dental implants are worth it. Getting an implant rather than leaving a hole can actually prevent bone loss, because your jaw bone will erode after a time of the tooth not being there. It also avoids the stress on your healthy teeth that a bridge connected to neighboring teeth can add. They look good (from what I can see) and really, it's not too terrible to have the surgeries done. The down sides I saw were that it is costly and it does take a while to complete the process, especially if you need the bone graft before your jaw is ready to have the post put in it.

Ask to see pictures of the work of the dentist who will be doing the implant. Ask about the health of your adjacent teeth, and what would be likely to happen if you chose a bridge connected to those adjacent teeth instead. Ask about the health of your jaw bone, and what will be likely to happen if you get or do not get the implant. Read up about dental implants, too. Look at pictures of the work of other dentists so that you have something to compare "Dr. G" to.

Good luck with it :-)

6. What is the alternative?
If you have a trusty family dentist and have been pleased with that dentist's therapeutic approach on other issues, the only question is whether there is another treatment and why an implant is preferable.
I take it you've already had crowns and root canals or the dentist has explained why neither of these are appropriate.

Ask about cost too. They sometimes recommend the "best" strategy rather than the most economically sound one.

9. Do you want to request of your Dentist: Cow Bone/Human Bone/Your Own
Bone???? That's the question...

Did you all see the Funeral Home Ghouls who are stealing bone and tissue from Caedavers...(sending "sawbones" into Funeral Homes where they take and saw off organs and bones of your loved ones and send them to "Tissue Implant Companies" for PROFIT?

Have you read the latest news? Where Dentists and Doctors need to be notified that you might have Hepatitus I and II, Aides or Syphillus from "batches of bone" from Alistair Cooke? or maybe Granny and Grandpa?

 I hate to be "ghoulish" here....but it's more of BUSH CORPORATE PROFITEERS at WORK?

being offered right now. There was lots of innovative stuff being offered awhile back that worked for patients...depending on their needs.

But right now folks are being told "just pull that tooth out" because we can SAVE YOU MONEY with an "Implant."

But, not all Dentists are revealing where the "bone comes" to do the Implant...is what I'm saying.

I'd be interested in YOUR EXPERIENCE...and when you had it and what was involved. It sounds good!

They pulled the tooth and planted the implant the same day. I had infection problems (see above) but no foreign bone was involved.

8. My dad does implants

Do websearches on the guy. Most of them have websites which will list their training and certification, etc. You might run into their legal histories too. You can call up his office and the front desk might be able to give you some info and tell you where you can call to check up some more (State Board, etc.)

So that's really not much. I guess you could ask some other dental offices who they refer their implant work to.

Here's what I know about implants. Don't smoke. Do what the doctor says. Don't abuse the tissue before it's healed. Don't smoke. Wounds do not like tobacco juice. Give the implant every chance to "take".

11. I just consulted with my Dentist...He said: "Use YOUR OWN BONE!"
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 09:08 PM by KoKo01
he said: "I've been getting alot of "stuff" about all this material from Funeral Homes and I've NOT used that. He said: "If I pull your tooth, I use "bovine bone" to fill in right after I pull it so that if it's on the bottom I can "immediately do an implant." He said: "So far, I've not had One patient complain they had "Mad Cow" disease.!"

BUT, his important caveat was to get the Dentist to use YOUR OWN BONE if yo are doing an implant.

I had another Dentist tell me that all bone he used was "sterilized" {yet the bone stolen and hacked with surgery saws by unscrupulous surgeons from Furneral Homes...with ALL MAKING A PROFIT} and so I shouldn't worry...yet the BUSH FDA has had to ISSUE MAJOR WARNING that ALL WHO HAD IMPLANT SURGERY FOR BONE AND TISSUE IN THE LAST 18 MONTHS need to be aware that you need to have some blood tests in the coming months just to be sure you didn't get "infected stolen tissue/bone from Ghouls who Cut Up Bodies" in League with "Corrupt Funral Homes."

Just a warning here.

13. I got a card for a "free" dental exam to see what dentures would cost...
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 09:27 PM by fed-up
The dentist then suggested "dental implants" as they would last longer at a whopping cost of $20,000 for both upper and lower!!!

Needless to say I haven't been back.

My dentures will have to wait until dear son moves out and I sell my house (cash in on equity before it vanishes) and downsize and get out of debt to be able to afford dental care.

Did I say I don't have insurance yet???

Good luck whatever you do.

forgot to add the funny part of the story

I was in so much sticker shock from the price quoted, that I forgot the implants were permanant and immediately conjured up visions of what I would look like if the teeth were removed at night just leaving the posts.

Of course I then went and asked the dentist if I could ask him an embarrassing question: would the implants affect my oral sex life.

He looked a tad embarrassed, said no one ever asked him that before and then quickly recovered and said he didn't think they would affect my sex life.

Later when I left the office I realized my huge mistake. Glad I never have to go back there again!!!

22. Al Frankin did a 'bit' on his show comparing * lies to Clinton
and after comparing the * lie of how all wiretaps were done with warrants vs the Clinton lie of "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" he went on to say:

...and at least Clinton's words opened up a useful and thought provoking dialog. As a result of those words, My wife and I were able to open up and talk about the subject. We came to the conclusion that yes, oral sex is indeed adultery. Which is why...we haven't...had any...since we were..married...........................

With no Katherine to groan in protest his line was followed by dead silence. that's Frankin's delivery. just deadpan. about 5-7 seconds of dead air followed as I laughed my ass off in the car.

anyways, good on you for keeping the fire lit.

...and I hope that anesthesia is an option for the implant procedure...

16. First question: Before implants were invented...
...what did people who "needed" implants do? (I'll bet they made do with bridges and dentures.)

Does your dentist get a kickback for the work he sends to his dental implants pal?

18. They still do this....but "Implants" are the lastest thing...Just beware
what they use to "fill in your bone." Because there are companies robbing bodies from nursing home to get bone to use in "Implants." And the bone could be infected and be recalled and with Busch/Co. America...you won't be able to sue your Dentist if you come down with HIV, Syphillus, or Hepatitus I and II because the Bone he Used was faulty and taken from a corrupt source.

27. I am in the process of preparing myself for 5 implants
Being a senior citizen and having spent big bucks and many hours in dental chairs trying to keep my teeth. Having had all my teeth capped and the majority of my teeth with root-canals, I have been told that 5 of my teeth have fractured at the gum line.

I also have the problem of having had radiation therapy to my head and neck 19-years ago due to cancer. Radiation therapy and radiation itself has a cumulative affect on the bone cell structure so I have been extremely fearful of problems with dental implants. Last week the Radiologist doc gave the go ahead for dental implants so I am just getting the nerve up to set a date with my Peridiodontic/Implant surgeon.

I have been a patient of this Dental Surgeon for the past 20-years and have the utmost confidence with him. He not only practices in my home town but he also teaches and gives seminars on dental implants and gum disorders throughout the world. I never now when I enter his office if a group of foreign dental students will be studying my mouth or what.

Because I have bone loss and he will not place an implant where there is bone loss I asked him about bone transplant. He told me that he does do this, but he has done consideral research and written pappers on harvested (cadaver) bone and he absolutely will not use it because far to many problems can occur. He will only use the bone of the patient themselves.

My surgeon has recommended that I go on line and pull up his research papers and check other areas to educate myself......which I have. Now to set up the appointment.
