1. I knew a little black girl who wanted a Barbie desperately
and so I bought her a black Barbie -- her disappointment just broke my heart.

The fact is, the popular culture values blonde hair and light skin. Even little children know this.

2. I'm not sure what to make of this... other than sad
I had a doll my great granny made me. Just a little rag doll with yellow yarn for hair, blue buttons for eyes and a pretty red dress with little white flowers. When you flipped her over and put the red dress over her head, there was a little black girl with curly brown yarn for hair with a big blue bow in it, shiny black buttons for eyes, and a pretty blue dress. I loved my two dolls in one and never had a preference. You can tell by how it looks now that I played with both dolls equally.

This is how kids should be raised.

Thank you, Granny!

6. It happens here too, huh?
I'm a black Latin American man, and I know what this is about... it is probably the most long lasting effect of racism: self hatred. It happened to me, and to be quite honest, I'm still recovering.

In Latin America, it is probably stronger than here. It is openly said in schools, TV, your own family, the job market: Whiteness is beautiful and directly related to intelligence and success. To be black is to be ugly, to be dumb, to be what your nation wants to hide, to be the "other". This breaks my heart because I had to grow up dealing with this, openly. Down there, there is only one solution to the skin problem: "whitening". You realize your skin color is a birth defect, something that shouldn't be passed on to future generations, something you need to work with. You need to compensate, so you adopt "whiteness" in any way you can: by embracing white role models and doing anything to your hair and body to look like them, to reject other blacks and choose white friends for all the wrong reasons and be willing to endure mockery and humilliations with a smile because you are "with the right people", looking desperately for a white boyfriend or girlfriend because you want to "improve your race" even if there is no love in the relationship and you have to act subserviently with your white companion, try joining political and social organizations that are identified with whites just to show them you can be as good as they are...

People don't know...

7. If it helps any...
I'm a balloon twister on the side and whenever a black girl asks for any kind of human-esque figure like a princess or a mermaid, they're pretty thrilled when they see me blow up a brown balloon and put black hair on it, and the parents express surprise at 1. there being brown balloons and 2. I have them.

10. This hits home
My dad's second wife is black and my (half) sister, whose husband is white, has two young daughters. Recently she told me of an incident in which the older girl, whose hair and skin are a shade darker than her younger sister, said "she's white and I'm black" in a despairing tone of voice. We would hope that all the love from their family could protect them from the insidious propaganda of racism. But we are bombarded 24/7 with subtle messages (or unsubtle) that white is good and black is bad. We can't insulate kids from this message, but we can try to counteract it.

Thanks for posting this.

14. I didn't really think much of this...
When I was watching until she started asking for the good doll vs. the bad doll. That was rough, but then when she asked the little girl which one looks like you and she so grudgenly pushed forward the "bad" doll. That's a gut punch right there.

Being black myself I'm always aware of color coding with light shades of skin being hyped... such as... Whenever you see a black television or film leading man 9 times out of ten his wife/girlfriend/love interest, even if she is black, will have a far lighter skin tone than he does (don't believe me? Start paying close attention). And often back in the day in cartoon movies of the 80's the villian was often color coded much darker than everyone else, usually, literally black (as opposed to brown).

And I must say that even though I'm usually a huge fan of movies like it, the movie "300" which I believe is coming out this summer features the soliers of Troy or Sparta one fighting against an evil horde trying to take them over. That evil horde, by costume and look are basically meant to be a mixture of African and Arabic people. So once again it's everyone with dark skin that's the bad guy which is why I refuse to go see the movie.

At any rate my point was usually I kind sluff that stuff off and don't even really pay attention any more/let it bug me, but now that I see the way that it's effecting yet another generation of black youth.... Something just has to be done. I don't know what, but something.

17. About 300
It's loosely based on the Battle of Thermopylae, in which the Spartans were fighting off the Persians. Why is it wrong for the Persians to look... Persian?

23. The comments speak for itself...
Everyone who's of color is the bad guy, everyone with fair skin is the good guy. I find that concept offensive. It's a movie based on a comic book/graphic novel. In either one of those mediums, which are both based on fantasy, so, if it is so loosely based, why is it the concept couldn't have been adjusted a bit to keep it from having the appearance of being bigoted?

I imagine you don't know what it's like, but we'll simply end it by saying I don't really want to see a movie where everyone who looks like me is the evil enemy worthy of being destroyed while all those who are noble and good look nothing like me. Even if it isn't meant to be overtly racist the truth is a current of that runs underneath the surface no matter who wants to dismiss it.
