It will be a sit down debate, so he should be as relaxed as he was during this interview.

14. This is the contrast I hope to see on stage.
Biden is ready to answer any question. Sarah isn't. The contrast between the two answers should be stunning.

But we shall see. I'm sure Palin's been coached with a bunch of buzzwords and snappy putdowns and has practiced saying the names of every major foreign leader in the world. I expect her to do a lot better in the debates because there won't really be any followup questions, and that's where Palin's ignorance comes out.

She doesn't put the buzzwords in the right places, or in the right order. Couric asks her about the economy, and Palin repeats something about health care and job creation.

This debate is going to be comedy gold. I've gotta go pop some popcorn.

there are 30-55% of our neighbors out there who think her answers were totally on the mark--that she answered the questions sensibly and rationally---that they'd be hard pressed to come up with a SCOTUS case they disagreed with--because they don't pay attention to things like that. They worry about gays having the right to marry; Dems taking their bibles and guns from them... they see this knucklehead as one of them and they are happy as lipstick wearing pigs in slop that she won't answer Couric's questions.

Imagine that, asking her a question about other Supreme Court Rulings. Who knew that this would be a stumper. Do not forget that this is Katie !@#$% Couric!!! You go to her for Softball questions, or to avoid people like David Letterman. If you screw this up, the next step is only Hannity or Rush. I must say, though, that it is so cool to see Katie ask follow up questions in these interviews.

Seeing her and Biden's answers side by side makes me so excited that I am going to a debate watching party tommorrow.

23. This debate is already over
Just hearing both sound bites made me ever confident that this debate is over. Listening to Biden is so refreshing. All that experience and insight and proof...and then listening to Palin...clueless, wingin' it, and trying to talk her way out of not knowing it. If Biden is as cool and direct tomorrow night, it's going to be clear and the election is going to be won. Who in their right mind would want this woman at the side of an old man in the most important post on Earth? With Biden, I can sleep at night and not worry about that call at 3 o'clock in the morning.

71. Anchor babies = babies immigrants have in the US
specifically to help them achieve legal status. Babies born here are US citizens.

Bet if you asked Palin about that term she would pretend you said "Anchorage babies." Intellectually insecure people like Bush and Palin fear admitting they don't know something. Instead of simply saying, "I don't know that term. What's it mean?" they will pretend they do understand it, and get it painfully wrong.

31. States should be allowed to violate citizens' Constitutional rights?
Palin is literally saved by the bell. Couric and CBS let her off the hook, ending the segment with Palin unable to cite a single other Supreme Court decision besides Roe v Wade -- let alone one with which she might take issue.

But it should also be noted that Palin again demonstrated her inability for complex, abstract thought... responding to Katie Couric one moment that she believes that the US Constitution *does* have an inherent right to privacy -- which Couric emphasizes is at the core of the Roe v Wade decision -- and then saying in the next moment that abortion rights should be left up to the states. So the states should have the right to violate their citizens' Constitutional rights? Or maybe Palin just doesn't understand the function of the Constitution?

Gotta love her. What a meatbag of memorized soundbites and talking points.

38. You actually have to be pretty clever to catch that...
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 10:04 PM by jberryhill
I had to go back and see if Couric said "in the Constitution" after "privacy" (my wife caught it).

I wasn't sure if Palin was saying that states should work out their own privacy regime, or if, as you say, she was saying that states should be able to violate the Constitution.

In all fairness the issue doesn't come up in Alaska, because the Alaska Constitution has an express right to privacy which, as a matter of fact, was the foundation of the decision that made it legal for Palin to smoke pot when she did.

(as if that's what this airhead was really thinking about)

39. It follows her pattern of responding with talking points or what she thinks ...
... is a safe and expected response.

She agrees that the Constitution expresses an inherent right to privacy, after which Katie highlights this right to privacy as the core of the Roe v Wade decision.

And then, it seems clear to me, Palin returns to her talking point that abortion rights should be left to the states; completely contrary to the just-expressed Constitutional right to privacy.

41. Ah, but, she rambles on to say that "states should decide.."

Decide what? How much privacy to provide under their state constitutions, or abortion in particular.

Palin talks over Couric when Couric makes the privacy-Roe connection, so her statement, while stupid, is spinnable - particularly in view of the fact that the AK constitution itself says the "right of the people to privacy is recognized and shall not be infringed."

So, a clever RW pundit could spin it as Palin having said that she believes in a right to privacy, and that states can provide greater privacy under their own laws than under federal law - which indeed they can.

But that would be assuming too much on the statement given.

re. choice. As she said it .."should be a state issue, in that sense a Federalist issue" a Federalist is one who believes in states uniting under a centralized government. You are right, those things are in direct opposition to one another. She should have learned that in high school or somewhere along the way in her pursuit of education. She throws words around that may sound impressive giving the impression that she is fountain of knowledge. God, I hate bullshitters and she is proving, beyond a doubt, to be a big one.

55. As governor of Alaska she should have responded by discussing
the Valdez oil spill case. (Exxon v. Baker) She didn't have to name it, she could have gone blank on the name, but she should have known about it and discussed it since the question was "What SC case do you disagree with." That case impacts her state, the citizens of Alaska, and has been on going for 19 years. It just came down in June of this year and she gave an interview about on Aug 30.

She just went blank and babbled talking points that made no sense, the McCain camp has made them their stepford candidate, she has no independent thoughts and cannot even access her own memories and experiences.

62. I think you're on to it
She cannot possibly be as bad as she has been lately. I've seen her debate in a clip before and she's pretty good. I can't say she's ever been that great in any interview or anything like that, but she's been awful in the Gibson and especially Couric ones.

I think she knows what she knows and it worked well for her in Alaska. She doesn't go in depth into anything and can present herself well. It takes a little bit of intelligence to do that, maybe not a lot but some.

But now she's on a national stage, she's scandal prone, she has all of these people trying to get her to learn all these different complex issues and then relearn a bunch of other stuff she knew and it's all smashed into superficial talking points for her. It's like they erased what she knew and crammed a bunch of talking points into her, on most of it is on topics she knew nothing of in the first place. She sounds like a short circuited robot the way she incoherently rambles from point to point.

66. Darling Sahara
She's actually a gift to the Obama/Biden ticket. If McCain really DID consider her before tapping her for the VP spot, he must've based his decision on how best he could hand the election to the Democrats. And I gotta say - shy of asking OJ to join him, he did pretty good with dame Sarah!

73. Hey, Sarah, how about Texas v. Johnson?
The Supremes ruled burning the American flag was protected speech. Doncha jus wanna smack 'em for sayin' it's OK to flambe Ol' Glory? She wouldn't know the name of the case, of course. I looked it up on Wikipedia. But surely, she knows the gist of the decision. "Ooh, Katie, there was that one on flag burnin'. What were they thinking, saying it's OK to burn the American flag? 'Cause it's just not. No way. Why, it's not even patriotic."
