8. I happened to watch this part of it on CNN, so this is from memory . . .
OBAMA: I understand you're a die-hard republican.

SHOPOWNER: That's right.

OBAMA: How's business?

SHOPOWNER: Terrible these last years.

OBAMA: Ever hit yourself on the head repeatedly? It hurts, doesn't it? Once you realize that, why would you keep doing it?

SHOPOWNER: Good point.

3. How can anyone accuse him of hating America?
Someone who likes pie that much has to be a true patriot.

12. Story With a Sweet Ending ...
"So we had ordered our pie and the employees there decided they wanted to take a picture with me because they said 'our boss, the owner of this diner, he's a die hard Republican. So we just want to kind of tweak him a little bit. We want to take a picture with you and we'll show him the picture,' " Obama recounted.

Well, who should walk out with Obama's coconut cream pie and Strickland's lemon meringue pie, but the Republican owner of the diner.

"I said, 'How do you do sir? I said, I hear you are a die hard Republican.' He said, 'that's right.' I said, 'How's business?' He said not so good. My customers, he said, they don't have any money to eat out," Obama told his laughing audience. "I said, well that's the problem when you've got an economic policy that gives everything to the folks at the top and doesn't give folks who are working hard every day a break."

"I said, by the way, who's been in charge of this economy for the last eight years? He said, the Republicans," said Obama, a bit gleefully at this example of the Socratic method. "I said, but you vote Republican. He said that's right. I said, if you keep on hitting your head against the wall, at some point, do you stop?"

According to Obama, the owner told him he had a good point. "I said you might want to try Democratic this year. We can't get any worse than these Republicans have been doing," he said. "So I think I might get his vote, along with his pie. Here is my point Philadelphia, we can't have four more years of this economic theory that just helps folks at the top and doesn't help ordinary people."

15. Can you picture McCain or Palin trying to tell a similar story?
It would get bungled, become incoherent and the point would inevitably be lost.

http://www.maysville-online.com/articles/2008/10/12/local_news/837obama.txt

i posted it earlier and was told the article was some how being a bigot for suggesting he had coconut cream... but he actually infact did have coconut because they didnt have sweet potato pie..

anyway, in the article the owner of the resturant(the republican) said the following :

"He was a real nice guy. He was really down to earth," said Seip. "I was really impressed. When you talk to someone personally like that it makes a difference."

When asked if Obama would be getting his vote in November, Seip said that he always keeps his vote private.

"Probably changed my mind one way or another," said Seip about the opportune visit.

sounds like Obama won somebody over

19. Such a brilliant response from the republicans....
But with all that talk of pie, Republicans said Obama forgot to mention that he plans to raise taxes. "Barack Obama offered more pie in the sky rhetoric," noted Tucker Bounds, spokesman for John McCain.

NOT!!! :D

22. Al Jarreau's song about Sweet Potato Pie
comes to mind every time I hear Sweet Potato Pie mentioned--thanks for posting this video and thanks to those who posted the transcripts of the conversion that followed--how can anybody doubt that Obama will be one of our greatest presidents ever and that he's our last hope to stop our descent into tyranny? He can actually bring people together so we can work toward consensus instead of using the failed "Divide & Conquer" style of so-called leadership--and he likes pie--what's not to love?

23. I wonder
Did anyone else get the impression all the "pie" talk was driven by some internal joke? Perhaps he had a wager with someone about using the word pie a certain number of times during the speech.

"Obama ended up saying the word 'pie' fifteen times in a little under two minutes. YOUR MOVE, SENATOR MCCAIN!"

28. Here's the point of the story ... which was cut off from the video
I heard this speech in Philadelphia on Saturday. Yes, there was a point to his kidding around about pie- it led to this story:

Obama talked about his experiences in a diner in Georgetown, Ohio. He met with the owner of the diner. The owner said he was a hardcore Republican. "How's business?" Obama asked. The owner replied "Not good, few people in town can afford to go out to eat." Obama then tried to get him to understand that is the problem with the Republican's economic policies - they benefit the rich, and there aren't enough people in the middle class left to support local businesses. Obama suggested that he stop "beating his head again the wall" supporting the same policies that haven't worked.

Obama said he thinks he won the man's vote.
