3. That tune resonates so well with the worker and banking
abuses underfoot these days. Besides Crosby has such a great voice.

4. I watched the PBS story on The Crash of 1929 yesterday. It was frightening
in how much it was exactly like now. Hopefully we learned something since then.

5. The guy who wrote it, Yip Harburg, was a *GASP* socialist
He also wrote "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"

His name might not be familiar to many, but his songs are sung by millions around the world. Today a journey through the life and work of Yip Harburg, the Broadway lyricist who wrote such hits as “Brother Can You Spare a Dime” and who put the music into the Wizard of Oz. Born into poverty on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Yip always included a strong social and political component to his work, fighting racism and poverty. A lifelong socialist, Yip was blacklisted and hounded throughout much of his life.

6. He was also an atheist. *Double gasp!*
He wrote "Rhymes for the Irreverent."

He also wrote "Cabin in the Sky" and April in Paris."

And he wrote this:

FAIL SAFE

It's a hundred billion dollars
Every year at your expense,
For the Pentagon to gadget up
Our national defense.
But it's comforting to know that
In the up and coming war,
We'll be dying far more safely
Than we ever died before.

7. I was friends in 2nd grade with the son of Jay Gorney who wrote the music
Jay Gorney wrote a school song for our school around that time, but by the next year we mysteriously didn't have a school song any more. It was only decades later that my parents told me that over the summer he had been called to testify by the House Un-American Activities Committee.

10. Don't forget your local City Rescue Missions/Homeless Shelters
for Thanksgiving. That's one we make sure to give to year after year - this year they will have many more people at their tables around the country too!

(plus, invite someone you know who has no where to go over to YOUR place for Thanksgiving too!)

Cheers
Sandy
