That is one of the tricks of Punditry. If you are losing the argument. Raise your voice to overpower any argument. Don't debate the points, just say what you said before LOUDER.

41. Exactly
Why do they have to take a sledgehammer to a small problem? Just reinstate the original and say that's what they're doing.

Then, the religious idiots (which does not include the majority of religious people) have to justify their hissy-fit. Puts them on the defensive.

20. Every time I see this hack, I just smile.....the "new bor".....
They've found his replacement. She comes with a big mouth, a big chip on her shoulder, and absolutely NO ears...or sense of hearing. She isn't listening at all to what he is saying.

I'm a Christian. But I'm also not opposed to taking the worlds "...under God.." OUT of the pledge. I taught third grade and retired after 30 years of elementary school teaching. We said the pledge nearly every day in my classroom. I explained what the HUGE words meant to elementary school age children. But when it came to "under God"....I was always uncomfortable with it.

We have atheists who believe in no such thing. We have Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jehovah Witnesses (who will NOT pledge allegiance to anything)...and I see no loss in taking out those two words that were inserted some fifty years ago.

This man is spot on. She is a f*cking retard ...once again...and they make it sound like they are going to be punishing the Christian children. No such thing. First...most could care less if they say the pledge or not. Just the neocon'ers are all worked up. Secondly, removing those two words would simplify the problem and offend no one....except the Jahovah's...which simply don't participate passively.

Take it out...move on. Waaaaay to simple for this dumb bitch and her mob of angry red necks.

25. Furthering the Perspective
Edited on Wed Nov-19-08 04:14 PM by JimboBillyBubbaBob
I have had a problem with the pledge for a number of decades. The "under god" part is just a piece of it. The mere recitation of the pledge is a loyalty oath to a government anchored on the concept of a civil religion that it promotes. The pledge is a rite within that civil religion, as patriotism is its dogma. I have long held and support the idea that the Constitution is the article that should be revered. Government officials take an oath to uphold the Constitution and execute the office they are charged with. As with the soon to be ex-president, executing the office means upholding the Constitution, not actually executing and killing the Constitution as we have all been witness to. The tyranny of majority can be a frightful thing under given circumstances.

50. Yes, it's not just Under God
The whole pledge should be eliminated.

First, as someone else said, kids don't know what they're saying.

Second, it is essentially an attempt at a kind of brainwashing, albeit a pretty bad one. (I'm thinking of the stories we've heard about some of the things children in some mideast countries likewise must say every day, and how people in this country reacted to that!)

Third, it was phony from the start, written in the late 1800s essentially as a marketing tool to help sell flags, hence pledging allegiance to the flag. (Though I suppose it is appropriate that it was born of capitalism!)

Fourth, in a democracy, we should not be pledging our allegiance to our government... the government serves the people, it should be pledging its allegiance to us.

26. Schooled again
This is the same bimbo that got owned by an Obama spokesperson a while back. I forget his name, he wrote a piece slamming FAUX news about pushing an invented McCain attack on Obama.

She's all set up, smug with her God on her side, to crush this puny ungodly savage. And all he does is calmly dissect her "Hey it says the word God on a building I saw so it must be constitutional" argument.

Fun to watch. But you just know that there are just as many, actually more, watching that and coming to the conclusion that she won the argument. FAUX news can never lose, because even when they do, their loyal followers don't believe it.

48. Kids WANT to recite the pledge?
What kid WANTS to recite the pledge? That is a line bullshit if I ever heard one. ADULTS want kids to recite the pledge. The kids don't give a shit. I surely did not care whether I had to recite the pledge or not. It was just some repetitive robotic thing done every morning for no reason that I could discern - I remember not even knowing what the words meant. I thought "indivisible" was "invisible" - and I had some vague notion that something called a "public" or "me public" or "re - public," whatever that was, might have this super power like Wonder Woman's jet or something.

The point is as a kid with a first grade vocabulary the words had no meaning. Therefore it was not a pledge. Thus having a kid recite a pledge they do not fully understand is pointless. The whole "under God" issue is even more pointless. Adults should be embarrassed playing these idiotic political games using children as pawns.

54. I wonder if she realizes that the pledge was written by a socialist?
Francis Bellamy (1855 - 1931), a Baptist minister, wrote the original Pledge in August 1892. He was a Christian Socialist. In his Pledge, he is expressing the ideas of his first cousin, Edward Bellamy, author of the American socialist utopian novels, Looking Backward (1888) and Equality (1897).

Francis Bellamy in his sermons and lectures and Edward Bellamy in his novels and articles described in detail how the middle class could create a planned economy with political, social and economic equality for all. The government would run a peace time economy similar to our present military industrial complex.

I was born the year the religious crap was inserted into the pledge. All through elementary school, I would stand, but would not put my hand to my heart, nor say the pledge. Looking back, I am amazed that I was never called on it.

Now that I can't stand, I ignore it completely.
