4. I know what's happened
We aren't teaching Geography in schools anymore. Heck here in Florida we don't even teach history properly. When I went to school we not only had geography, US History, World History and Florida History. Now all they have is the FCAT. There's more to school then just that stupid test

5. US puzzles are great...
but small children could choke on Rhode Island. :)

My kids are getting age appropriate maps of both the USA and the world as gifts this year. They are turning 2 years old. The maps might be a little over their head now, but I'm confident that they will make great decorations in their toy room. My boys love to learn new stuff, so I think they will be curious about the maps and maybe just maybe they will learn something.

In another year or two, they will be getting map-puzzles and globes.

No way am I letting my kids become one of THOSE people that cant identify the US on a map.

20. When we were kids in the 1950s and 1960s, we used to
play geography games. We would call out states or countries from the atlas, and test each other on capitals. We also had to locate major rivers in the right countries or, if in the US, the right states. We also played history games, naming presidents, dating major events, etc.

Since we traveled by car for vacation visits to grandparents' or when Daddy was transferred from one base to another, suche games did a lot to keep me and my 5 siblings entertained and under control for many hours on the road. To us it was just fun. It never felt as though we were doing anything like "homework," because we to play those games.

Nowadays kids watch their own private TVs or DVD players in the back of the car, or they listen to their iPods or play video games. They don't look at the scenery when traveling or interact with each other or with their parents at all. Instead, they occupy their own private media bubble, as is the case wherever they go, whomever they are with--whatever their age.

Sigh.

24. That's cool. Maybe they will like and learn from this, too:
But probably only in a few years...

States and capitols:

Countries in the world:

I know I learned from it, and I still think it's funny! It's not just for kids.

6. People are morons. Accept it.

As a kid I was rather "aware" of the world around me (no boasting), but the kids that I hung around with were rather mundane.

I felt more at home talking to grownups than other kids.

12. And Sarah Palin thinks Africa is a country and doesn't know what nations make up North America!
So anyone who can't locate the United States on a world map is certainly qualified to be President!

15. How about a 'citizen renewal test?' Everyone takes a comprehensive test...
on the Constitution, organization of government, how a bill is
passed, what the Fed does, and relevant aspects of regulation
and questions about maps.

Fail? citizenship is not renewed.
