1. Cenk's wrong on this one

A substantial (perhaps a majority) of people will support a Republican party that defends the interests of the rich, for two reasons. First, a number of Americans think they are rich, even though objectively they are only middle class or working class. Secondly, if there are some that realize they aren't rich, they think they will be rich in the future, so the Republicans are looking out for their future interests. Just look at all the idiots opposed to the Inheritance tax, or think they are paying the highest marginal rate on all their income, not just a part. Check out the book Whats The Matter With Kansas for insights into this phenomenon.

2. I half agree and half disagree

I've read and I enjoyed it. And yes, there are a good amount of middle class (and especially upper middle class) folks who believe, generally incorrectly, that they're going to be rich someday.

But the book was written 5 years or so ago, and times have changed. The mentality hasn't changed across the board, but I think a lot of people who just didn't get it before get it now, or at least they're *starting* to get it. Just look at this last election by income:

-People making less than 100k a year voted for Obama overall.

-People making between 100-200k a year voted for McCain overall.

-People making more than 250k a year voted for Obama overall.

I can't recall now if that middle figure is supposed to go up to 250k, but either way you get the idea. Many in that 100-200k group bought into the idea that successful people are taxed more and that's not fair, and someday they'll be rich and they won't want to be taxed more, etc. But the other two income groups give me hope that What's The Matter With Kansas has lost *some* (not all) relevance.

the class war since 1980. but the pendulum has swung back and kudlow(sp) is in danger of losing his greedy head.

5. Cenk is correct. If the Democrats don't roll over like they did in the bush years and state the

facts correctly, then it's impossible to have the 'tax haven' cheats look good.

7. The capital gains tax is 15%, but for a married couple it starts at $131,000

Anything under that is not taxed by the feds. The same married couple pulling down $65,100 is taxed at 15%, but any dollar beyond that is taxed at 25% and up. Our tax system is clearly built on the premise that investment is much more important than working for a living.

10. Popular sentiment being what it is, I think Cenk is right.

There are a lot more people that work for a living than those that live off capital gains. I don't think the inequity will last for much longer. It is politically untenable now.
