On the Senate floor last night, Sen. Robert Bennett (R-UT) said that American prison guards would “have no idea what they’re getting into” if Guantanamo detainees were transferred to U.S. prisons. Speaking today, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) slammed the GOP, saying his Republican colleagues should have “a little more respect” for the professionalism of American prison guards:

DURBIN: Some of my Republican colleagues argue that Guantanamo is the only appropriate place to hold the detainees and they said, and I quote, “We don’t have a facility that could handle this in the United States,” end of quote. And American prison guards, they went on to say, quote, “have no idea what they’re getting into,” close quote. Well, I would just say to my colleagues who made those statements, you ought to take a look at some of our security facilities in the United States, and you ought to have a little more respect for the men and women who are corrections officers and put their lives on the line every single day to keep us safe and to make sure that those who are dangerous are detained and incarcerated. The reality is that we’re holding some of the most dangerous terrorists in the world right now in our federal prisons, including the mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the shoe bomber, the Unibomber, and many others.

Respect for correctional officers. There's a good chance that a goodly number of the right-wing congress critters that will be in jail soon. A little respect now might well save some pretty sore buttys in the future.

Great to see Democrats out there mixing it up with their 'Party of No' counterparts. They don't have a leg to stand on. Slowly but surely this is being unraveled. I don't think there is anything anyone could do at this point really to stop the ball rolling.

7. Truly and incredibly sad that the Republics seem to have drunk the Kool-Aide....

and now believe (given their public statements) that these terra-ists all have some kind of super-human powers, as seen in Marvel Comics. Forget shivs and shanks, these guy's will rip out your spine with their bare hands then levitate themselves over the wall and into your neighborhood using mindpower alone - all the better to rape your sons and daughters while continuing their war on Xmas and allowing teh gays to marry farm animals.

This depth of religion-based, willful ignorance and hysteria hasn't been seen since the dark ages. It's got to the point that I don't know which is winning the war among my emotions - fear, disgust, pity or "why won't they just march off a cliff into the ocean like good lemmings?"

8. They aren't even finishing the implanted thought for their people

Usually they at least offer a second half of mindless babble but this time it is just "No one wants the terrorists in THEIR community" or something about "letting them roam American streets"

Early on I did hear that some people said that there was some concern about questions whether there would be attacks on the localities that house the "terrorists" but I haven't heard that in a while. Maybe I am just getting the emails.
