The debate is over; the nutjobs who still don't believe in evolution can stop seeing their doctors and taking their antibiotics and just go home and stay out of science and politics.

I think we now have an explanation for george w. bush.

3. The Missing Link confuses the scientifically illiterate
Another missing link has been found.

There are so many missing links that have been discovered and not just for primates, it is stupefying how anyone uses the stupid "missing link" arguments against evolution.

My favorite recent missing links are the whales and their transitions from land to sea.

8. Great point
This is only another in a long line of missing links that have been discovered. The typical creationist response (after the complete denial) is to point out that now there are TWO missing links...the one that leads to this fossil and the one that follows it. The goalposts will continue to move with every discovery that weakens their argument, such as it is.

12. Hi, I first saw similar pictures on one of my favorite science news sites

Here are a couple stories but the site has many more.

http://www.physorg.com/news140446513.html
http://www.physorg.com/news117292061.html

But I used google images to find an image fast. Google "whale evolution" then click on images.

Here's another image.

4. Isn't it sad that science is still a religiously-political no-no - in the 21st Century?
How arrogant. Just as in the time of Galileo and the others before him and since. How arrogant - to not have an open mind.

9. heh
at this point my mind isn't open at all. The evidence in favor of evolution is so overwhelming that it would take an earth-shattering find to shake my confidence in it. I refuse to be open-minded about Noah, great floods, and the like until something resembling evidence is presented...keeping in mind that everything presented so far has been utterly debunked.

13. In case there is any confusion - I meant an open mind for those whose
Reverend told them that they must believe in the Bible versions as interpreted by mere humans who God had a talk with.

6. Happy to be related to Ida
I'm proud to be related to little Ida, too. (Strictly speaking, she as an individual, is not our ancestor, as she died at approx. age 9 months. The ancient baby had a broken wrist.) We are descended from her relatives who lived to reproduce, though.

11. I know some of the "nutjobs", unfortunately this will not deter them
They will just say "that one was just an anomoly, a mutation. There should be millions if they were really a missing link"... etc.

I have conversations about scientific things all the time with them and they always just argue with the facts with answers they learned at church or say things like "I know the earth is only thousands of years old because I can just FEEL it. It doesn't feel like an old planet to me." Um, okaaaaaaay. (These are educated professional people.)

(Also, I can't watch the video, it is not working for me.)

14. I was taught in Lutheran schools fossils were placed in the ground by the Devil
to test our faith.

Facts are not an obstacle to fundamentalism. Quite amusing to hear that this evidence would be useful for debating fundies.

16. "A" missing link has been found
There are always "gaps" in the fossil record, and there always will be. Don't get me wrong, I am an evolutionary biologist and am entirely comfortable with evolutionary theory.

But for those who wish to suspend rationality, the lack of a 47 million year long video showing every minute step in the process will be all the lack of evidence they ever need. Unfortunately, fossils are quite rare.

17. I am hoping this is not a fraud...
Found on somebody's wall? More samples please.

However the case for evolution is demonstrably evident as witness the various disciplines of science that confirm and none refute it. Most evolutionary links will fight to the death not to die in some fossil preserving area. This is the problem.

It is time now for religion to have a miracle before our eyes. I believe they blew it with the tsunamis.

18. Frauds will happen. This was studied for two years, right.
Animals cannot ordinarily pick the time or place they die. The conditions have to be just right for fossils to be preserved and that isn't a problem. I much prefer that nearly all dead organisms are broken down.

Ugh, I hate that the clip even brought up religion.

20. Someones calling it overhyped and bad science
http://scienceblogs.com/laelaps/2009/05/poor_poor_ida_or_overselling_a.php

"The paper tried to cover so much, so quickly, and contained so many shortfalls that I honestly have to wonder why it was allowed to be published in such a state. Perhaps we will never know, but I am sickened by the way in which a cable network has bastardized a legitimately fascinating scientific discovery, with the scientists themselves going along with it every step of the way. I can only hope that Darwinius will eventually receive the careful analysis it deserves."
