2. Republicans, most of whom profess to be Christians,
at the same time firmly believe they are NOT their brother's keeper. They are the YOYO (You're On Your Own) crowd. The important that is that they have theirs and they hate to pay taxes for anything which does not directly benefit them.

I also remember it from the first line of Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing":
"Now look at them yo-yo's that's the way you do it.." Republicans are simply YOYOs (You're On Your Own).

14. It is odd...
that right-wing Christians who do not believe in evolution become survival-of-the-fittest evolutionists, while left-wing secularists who do believe in evolution act like "blessed be the poor" Christians when it comes to health care. Well, not JUST health care. I think William Jennings Bryan would be rather confused by this. I know I am.

88. That was actually one of Reagan's early applause lines:
"I am not my brother's keeper, I am my brother's brother", he said, back in the mid-Sixties. Never did know exactly what he meant by the second part of that line, since he never treated the rest of the human race as his brothers(let alone sisters) either.

"He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker and whoever is kind to the needy honors God." Proverbs 14:31. There are tons more of those in both the Old and New Testament that the RW seems to have just magically forgotten or they act like such verses just don't exist.

It's your fault if thing didn't work out in your favor...have some personal accountability.

If anyone ponies up at that audience it will because they fear "teh sochulizm" and not because they care. As I was watching I noticed a few of the folks in the audience not react with any kind of pathos...more like anger.

Why can't people see that? Why does everyone believe that they are somehow "protected" from situations like this? The insurance company won't cover her husband's treatment. They HAVE insurance and he still can't get treatment.

People ... get it through your heads: it doesn't matter if you have insurance. They can drop you whenever they want for any reason at all. They can refuse to pay for treatment for any reason at all. THIS COULD BE ANY ONE OF US! :grr:

By the way ... FUCK YOU, Coburn!

54. Because We Live In "It Can't Happen To Me" World
Ever notice how when Republicans talk about certain groups of people, there's always a buzzword, and they always talk about "them" in terms that indicate that they themselves could NEVER be a member of such group. For example, you'll hear them talk about "criminals" (as in, "criminals have all the rights; criminals don't deserve any rights; they're criminals!") but they can't ever imagine BEING the person accused of a crime (wrongfully OR rightfully). Meanwhile, statistics show that the average person runs afoul of the law multiple times DAILY (ranging from momentarily exceeding the speed limit to all sorts of other more horrific things).

And along these same lines, they can't IMAGINE that THEY would EVER be the ones dropped by their insurance companies for no apparent reason other than they wanted to get some of their hard-earned money (Republicans' money is ALWAYS "hard-earned," didn't you know?) back from the insurance company they paid it to.

Just like this video that's making the rounds right now (to thunderous applause from the mouth-breathers, by the way), of some disabled Marine getting up at a Town Hall Meeting and, after identifying himself as a disabled vet, and then engaging in some "Obama is a Nazi" red-baiting, proceeds to tell the speaker (can't remember who it is), "You say if I like my health insurance, I'll get to keep it. Well, thank you very much. It's not YOUR decision whether or not I get to keep my health insurance. It's MINE!!!" And as the crowd applauds, he storms down the aisle and leaves before the speaker even begins his answer.

Ignoring for a moment that as a disabled vet, he's already getting free, government-run health care from the Veteran's Administration, what the speaker's response SHOULD have been is: "It's NOT YOUR decision whether or not you get to keep your health insurance. It's the insurance company's decision. And if it turns out you need more money from them than they're willing to give you, guess what happens. You're out on your butt without any coverage at all. Insurance companies are like bad slot machines. You'll NEVER get more money out of them than you put in."

87. A lot of it is fear of an unpredictable world
Edited on Tue Aug-25-09 11:43 PM by Juche
Authoritarian republicans don't like ambiguity, and they have a high fear response. My understanding is that, for most republicans, the world makes more sense if you blame the victim because then you can convince yourself that if you are hard working, you will be safe. ie, if you lose your healthcare, or are homeless, or commit a crime it is 100% your fault and under your control. Even though its not totally true, it gives the conservatives a sense of relief, because they've just convinced themselves that bad things do not happen to good people.

Its basically a mythology they use to defend themselves from the unpredictable real world by convincing themselves that only 'those' people who 'make bad decisions' have bad things happen to them.

Very fucked up situation. Because conservatives are too immature to face the fact that the world can be evil and unpredictable, they have to convince themselves that the victim is always responsible. If you are uninsured, get a better job. If you are a drug addict, stop using. If you are gay, decide to be hetero.

Very sad. Whats even sadder is that the south has voted to keep black people down for 150 years. When Lincoln and the GOP forced reconstruction on the south, the south became democrat for 100 years. Then in the 1960s when the democratic party started supporting civil rights, the south became republican. Coburn is a senator because 70% of white people in the south vote for the party that opposes or opposed civil rights. When the dems opposed civil rights the vast majority of southern whites voted for them. When the GOP did, the same thing happened.

We get the democracy we deserve, but I wish southern whites would just fuck themselves over for once instead of the entire nation.

86. This happened to me and my mother!
Folks, IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU.

Beacuse THIS HAPPENED TO ME.

My mother was crippled in an auto wreck at the age of 55. Too young for Medicare, Dad made too much for Medicaid or SSI. And there is NO disabled spouse benefit for Social Security. We were effectively on our own. Tom Coburn will look you in the face and bullshit about charity, but I can tell you from experience that what Tom Coburn said was fucking bullshit!

Coburn says your churches will help. Churches didn't do fucking doodley squat when we needed help. Neighbors? THey had too many problems of their own to lend a hand? Family? I had family members sit on their ass and wouldn't lift a god-damned finger to help. For 3 years, I was the primary caregiver, cooking, cleaning, boiling hydrocolators and taking Mom back and forth to the doctor. I sacrificed to the point that I couldn't do anymore because I had my own student loans that had to be paid off. I left and within a year, My dad had to quit work and retire. Fortunately, he had Social Security then to fall back on. but when Mom finally got Medicare, it was too little and too late.

I will never forgive those who shoot the Jesus shit out of their mouths and turn right around and piss on those in need. And as for Coburn and his government is the problem shit, he's lower than rat shit.

Everyone must fend for themselves. If you're sick and can't help yourself, pray that someone else will, because the government doesn't give a crap about you.

In a Republican world, the only thing they give a crap about is "free enterprise" and ensuring that corporations can make a healthy profit, sick people be damned.

16. That's my Senator Douche bag
Coburn reveals the real republican health care plan: Got cancer - go to your science teacher neighbor to whip up a poultice, hit by a car - go ask your mechanic neighbor to build you a splint for your broken bones. Traumatic brain injury - see your senator's unpaid interns for diagnosis and treatment.

This lady apparently had insurance and her husband's treatment became too expensive so they simply refused to pay for it and sent him home. Capitalism at work. We are all one traumatic brain injury or other major illness away from financially devastating ourselves and family and/or being left to die by the insurance companies to which we pay ever increasing fees.

The worst part about this clip is how he completely failed to empathize with this very distraught woman and went right into political talking points. Would it have killed him to acknowledge her pain? To go take her hand and comfort her? That was compassionate conservatism on display and it made me ashamed to be from Oklahoma and ashamed of my fellow Oklahomans for re-electing this callous prick.

69. You are not alone
My state keeps fucking itself over by reelecting Shelby and Sessions over and over again also. A lot of them think that simply working is the key to all of their problems. The lack of insuruance or the event of insurance dropping you does not factor into it, or the possibility of someone who can't work. The YOYO crowd sickens me, they usually will sing a different tune if they have to deal with the same problems. They don't have a problem with our taxe dollars being spent on dumb premptive wars and paying for Senator's healthcare.

Purely conservative. No compassion.

and separate the government from the People on behalf of the for profit "health" insurance corporations.

It's much easier for his corporate clients to make blood money off the People's illness and injury if he can detach or estrange the American People from their own representative government.

Stop asking for or expecting help from us unless you're Wall Street.

They don’t give a fuck about you . . . they don’t give a fuck about you. Americans will probably remain willfully ignorant of the big red, white and blue dick that’s being jammed up their assholes everyday, because the owners of this country know the truth. 39. Republicans told the people in New Orleans the same thing after Katrina, the government should NOT
Edited on Tue Aug-25-09 05:10 PM by LaPera
be there for you, the people-....Government should only be there for trillion dollar corporate wars and bailouts, tax breaks & subsidies for the corporations...

BUT GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT BE THERE FOR THE TAX PAYING PEOPLE....NEVER!

Republican ideology: - Business & Corporations before people.

That's what makes our country great....By NOT helping the people! NO social programs for the common people - But the corporations do need help, so the rich can get richer and that what makes our country great....because we'll all get the crumbs as they 'trickle down".

Republicans have always demanded that the American people stand on their own two feet...That's a good thing.

NO government programs, NO Social Security, NO Medicare, NO unemployment insurance, NO minimum wage, NO Health Care!

So what if it's our tax dollars?

However, a government military is good & OK because we need to help the corporations steal more resources and make more profits, imperialism is good, it means cheaper prices for the consumers.....plus, it helps out corporations selling the weapons to the government.....see everybody wins!

The same can be applied to the insurance corporations, the sick should be on their own, the insurance companies didn't make them sick.

The insurance companies are great and powerful because they ignore the people who get sick, they should not insurance people who are sick it hurts corporate profits and they should be able to charge as much as thy like, it's the free market which makes a free country...Republicans are all for the most profits possible....that's what makes our country great.

Hate Lies Greed - The Republican Way - Republican ideology!!

72. And this sums it up in a nutshell.
Government should only be there for trillion dollar corporate wars and bailouts, tax breaks & subsidies for the corporations...

BUT GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT BE THERE FOR THE TAX PAYING PEOPLE....NEVER!

This is why, in spite of not being terribly pro-social-welfare, I abandoned the Republican party in favor of the Democratic party. There is always money for the war on drugs, and for immoral wars overseas, and corporations, and banks...but no money for your average American. It's bullshit.

Trickle down doesn't flow.

41. Repeat it: The government IS THE PEOPLE
Corporations are NOT the ones that the founding fathers envisioned running the country. A government of the people, by the people, and for the people; that means American citizens. Our neighbors. We need to keep pounding these RWers with the truth; if you hate you democratically elected government then you hate the very thing that makes America America.

51. WELL, YOU HAVE TO ADMIT, HE'S RIGHT. AS LONG AS REPUBLICANS UNDERMINE ALL DEMOCRATS EFFORTS TO
address problems, such as health insurance too expensive for many to afford> and that "many" is going to be many, and many MORE in the coming 10 years. i figure in less than 10 years there will be a meltdown of medical insurance. The numbers of people losing group coverage is going to go to possibly 355 - 40% as companies will not be able to afford it.

The Health insurance industry by preventing us from getting a public option are taking us to disaster which will lead inevitably to a single payer system.

102. , since you went down that path. Coburn is a Heterosexualist
He is a proponent of heterosexual supremacy, he's not as you describe, but rather a hard core anti-gay paragon of the Straight Community. He's one of yours. Own that fact.
The President has praised Coburn in the past, heavily, and when called on the utterly vile hate mongering on Coburn's part, Obama as usual praised the bigot more, spoke of what great pals they are, the work they have done together, and basically painted Coburn as a wonderful man. Coburn ran for office on a highly homophobic platform, shouting about 'lesbians in the bathrooms'.

Repuglicans and repuglican governments are NEVER the solution!

what we can do individually ... neighbors ... helping people... that reeks of socialism. I wonder if Coburn didn't palpitate as he uttered those words. I'm surprised he didn't tell her to pull herself up by her bootstraps.

I'm sure the a-holes at faux will come down hard on her for not being with her husband and going to some town hall instead.

Single-payer would have helped her and if she doesn't realize that then well ...

and what was just so vile was that there were people in that meeting who were applauding his cold hearted response to this poor woman. I also noticed that he would not even look at her while he was speaking. Disgusting. I wonder what he would do if he lost his health insurance and were in her position. My heart goes out to her and her husband. I hope that they can get the help that they desperately need. I believe that if we had single payer and/or universal healthcare, they would not be going through this.

80. Not sure why this is even news.
This is what Republicans believe -- at the core of their being. If you are fortunate enough to be insured or wealthy enough to pay for your health care with or without insurance, you are covered. If not, tough luck. Maybe a few people will be lucky enough to get "help" through their neighbors, but you are basically on your own.

85. That honestly wasn't that bad
I was expecting Coburn to say 'tough shit' or something. Instead he reiterated his (wrong) philosophy that government is not the answer. I don't think that makes him a scumbag. A bad politician and an idealogue, sure. A scumbag would've sneered and laughed. Coburn just seemed to imply he felt private industry should deal with these problems and not public.

Then again, senators like Coburn have absolutely no intention of pursuing legislation to help women like her or her husband. They did nothing during the Bush years to make her life easier. So it is safe to say Coburn really doesn't have any intent of doing anything to encourage the private market to help her. And he is opposed to the public system helping her.

he turned it into a political point that the government can't help her. Well that sure as hell is true if he has his way. Furthermore, he asked no questions of her or treated her like a human being with a real live issue that was jeopardizing her husbands immediate health and causing her heartache.

No, he truly is a scumbag.

112. Uhhh Tom, the Nieghbors are BUSY themselves, you ...
...idiot.

See Tom, most people are struggling and do not have health care either. They have problems and little time or money to fix them for themselves, which leaves them with nothing to help anyone else.

See Tom, when you take all that lobbyist money that enriches you so you will be more than happy to give blow jobs to health insurance lobbyists in return, you seem to "forget" your bribe money is coming from this lady's fees who you just dissed

And Tom, about that lady's fees she has paid into the insurance companies as millions have already done for decades, it is YOUR fair weather friends who in essence steal her money with YOUR blessings so they can deny her and her husband and can give themselves billion dollar bonuses.

See, Tom, not all Americans are RICH like you and your friends are who hoard all their resources because of their GREED while other Americans go without since you and your friends are sitting on it all and charging through the nose for whatever little you poop out.

See Tom, when people get sick, they are expected to take care of themselves because of YOUR ridiculous mantra, "You are on your own, to hell with you, I've got mine" B.S. you've been shoving down our throats for decades.

See Tom, we are broke and have nothing more to squeeze since you applaud so much not taxing the rich who are the very people who should be paying taxes even though they are the ones using most of our the government resources. You know, those silly things you allocate money for all the time like, our courts, the waterways, the transportation system, our airwaves, all those little things that you expect everyone else to pay for so you and your friends have them ...

See, Tom since you supported an illegal and unjust war that decimated our tax base, while you and your friends raked in the profits and pillage you have reaped from the misery you caused just so you can make a buck, there isn't anything left

See Tom, with your own SOCIALIZED medical benefits you and your family have thanks to being a government employee yourself, this is why you can at least pretend to help this woman when nobody else can

See Tom it is no longer you pretending to "represent" your constituents, you are perfectly at peace that is is no longer "by the People and for the People," you LIKE that it is really, "by the corporations and for the corporations," don't you Tom?

You freakin' self satisfied, clueless, greedy, selfish, overpaid, unamerican, heartless, unchristian BASTARD.
