Being paid for with Abstinence Only education dollars apparently. I thought the funding was ending for that program. I know the Democrats increased the funding of that failed program after they took control of congress.

But I heard the funding was ending soon. I hope so.

From the Amplify Your Voice blog

The ad is from the HHS website called www.4parents.gov. There is so much more they could have added to it. This is a shame.

No, that's not Leslee Unruh or the National Abstinence Education Association. It's the Obama Administration. Here's the new tv ad from 4parents.gov, run by the US Dept. of Health and Human Services.

It gets worse at their website. Here's what they have to say about marriage:

This Web site talks a lot about marriage, and that waiting until marriage is a sensible choice for your son or daughter to make when it comes to sex. But what's so valuable about marriage? Why is marriage any different, or any better than other family situations?

First of all, let's be clear on one important point. In general, children - and adults - do better in homes headed by a married mother and father.

****

What are the benefits married people enjoy?

* Live longer.
* Have better physical and emotional health.
* Are happier.
* Earn more.
* Enjoy better sex lives.

All kinds of right wing messaging there at the HHS website. I thought we would do better than that.

1. I've seen the ad and was disappointed. It was a was a waste of money.
That money should have been spent on how to protect yourself from STDs and pregnancy, not a "just say no" campaign, which we know doesn't work. I wouldn't care if the federal gov had money to burn, but this was a waste.

2. I have not seen it.
Do you remember what stations are airing it? The post at the You Tube site said it was airing on Nickelodeon.

I am disappointed in the whole parents site. Better nothing than a dearth of info.

11. Thanks.
It would infuriate me to see it on TV, I'm afraid. Even more than it did to catch it online.

I thought of this appointment to the HHS when I saw it.

4. Interesting. The ad just says "Tell us to wait."
It doesn't say how LONG to tell them to wait. It definitely does NOT say "Wait until you're married."

It also seems very toothless. Yeah, like parents just telling kids "Wait" is going to affect what they do.

7. Anyone here disputing the fact that children need a mother and a father?
Nothing wrong with bringing up the fact that kids are better adjusted when both parents are present.

8. I dispute that fact.
They are not always better off just because both parents are present. Not by any means.

I think there has been enough discrimination against same sex couples, and I hate to see someone here at DU think it is okay.

I taught too many years, saw many abusive parents, sometimes the mother, sometimes the father, sometimes both.

There are too many individual factors involved.

I expect better of our party than an ad like that during a Democratic administration.

12. Yeah, because they'd be better off in foster care -
than have two daddies or two mommies. I'm sure there's "Fox Facts" to support that.

13. Ad is done by Office of Public Health and Science.....not much real info.
Public Health and Science??? All they want to tell kids is wait to have sex?

http://4parents.gov/aboutus/index.html

"4Parents.gov is part of a national public education campaign to provide parents with the information, tools and skills they need to help their teens make healthy choices, including waiting until marriage to have sex. Nothing is more important for a child, pre-teen, or teen than a caring parent. If pre-teens and teens are going to make the choices that will help them grow up to be healthy adults, they need parents to talk with them about important topics like sex and relationships. 4parents.gov is meant to give parents the information and guidance they need for having these conversations

4Parents.gov was written by the Office of Public Health and Science, with expert consultation, and in response to public comment. 4Parents.gov is sponsored by the Office of Public Health and Science, Office of Population Affairs, and the Public Health Service. "Teen Chat," and "Parents, Speak Up!" guides are the result of a collaborative effort between the Administration for Children and Families and the Office of Population Affairs, Office of Public Health and Sciences."

15. Because abstinence worked out so well
for the Palin family, hasn't it?

'Recent surveys show that 70 percent of U.S. teens have engaged in oral sex by the time they reach 18, and more than 45 percent have had intercourse at least once. More than 70 percent of young women and 80 percent of young men approve of premarital sex, according to a study published recently in the Review of General Psychology.'
