This is Katrina Walker, a former Republican voter who came in to the office last week to thank Alan Grayson for standing up for health care and for her family. The Alta corporation fired her mother after she injured her back, and now her mother can't get health insurance because she is in the pre-existing condition pool. Walker saw Rep. Grayson on CNN and wanted him to know that she stands behind him on health care, and wants a strong public option to fix the system.

2. Hope springs eternal that other Democrats will follow Grayson's
example.

As Bill O'Reilly said to different Democrats on different occasions
one was Evan Bayh. "liberals have the best argument, but you will
not make the argument". He was not discussing Health Care, rather
Liberal versus Conservative.

I hope Grayson continues to show strength and others take note.

33. In all fairness, she didn't actually say that
From 3 minutes on she said she became disillusioned when she saw the RepubliCONs had 8 years to do something and when something is trying to be done all they can say is "no". She didn't link what happened with her mother to her epiphany, it sounds like it was a more gradual realization of what was hiding behind the GOP's curtain.

6. Netting $2.5 billion in profits last year........
wasn't enough for WellPoint, the nation's largest insurance company.

Now, WellPoint's affiliate, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, is suing the state of Maine for refusing to guarantee it a profit margin in the midst of a painful recession.

7. This is why the GOP is doomed
The relevant two-party system in the United States is the progressive Democrats opposed by the Blue Dogs.

Within twenty years, if not much sooner (like after the 2012 elections), the GOP will collapse and the Democratic Party will split. That is not as apocalyptic as it sounds.

29. That is an interesting hypothesis. And i like it
I find it interesting that the Progressives and "the rest" of the democratic party become the NEW 2-party of the future. That would be a very good sign for America. But i find it difficult how it could come to be as finance reform is still an issue. Every politician has a price and progressives, although they are America's only hope, will crack if the price gets high enough too.

about bottled water vs. tap and public transportation vs. owning a car!!!!!
This healthcare issue is overcoming the abortion crap that had people siding with the GOP. It's too important to too many people.

18. Guess that is one of the big differences between repukes and Democrats/Progressives....
The Dems/Progressives empathize even without having to actually experience the need and deprivation.
Repukes have no sympathy for those that are suffering, until they themselves are one of them.

Guess empathy is not in the repuke/RWINGNUT genes.

19. That's something I noticed too.
I mean, I hate to generalize, but it is something I've seen time and time again. Take Dick Cheney's views on gay marriage. Does anyone think he would support state's rights to allow gay marriages if his daughter wasn't gay?

While her own mom is in a pickle because of her back condition and inability to get insurance, Katrina graciously points out that there are people worse off. Especially those who are dying.

27. Saw the video
and it is sad. :( Is this what it's going to take? For every repub voter to have to suffer personally for them to wake up? The depth of the moral bankruptcy and intellectual dishonesty of the republican party is absolutely shocking to me. :wow:

I don't think we are born with a lot of empathy. We are born with a survival instinct.
The ability to see your own survival in the betterment of other peoples situation is something you are taught. Either by example or experience.

The good thing is that, as Dr King also kind of put it, that arch is bending the right way in the long run.

Now, as you say, the republicans are dependant on people not getting there and are hard at work keeping people off that path of enlightenment - knowing full well, in a lot of cases, that they are deceiving people. They are the kind of people that think that them having 100 and you 10, is better than them having 105 and you 20.

34. As I said upthread, she didn't specifically say that was what woke her up
It could have been a contributing factor to existing thoughts she was already having, we don't know the full story apart from what she says from 3 minutes in.

I'm a glass half full kind of guy and think that her epiphany in and of itself is a wonderful thing and I was touched that she took time out to buy roses, a card & a balloon and go and visit his office to offer her personal thanks for what he said.
