November 10th, 2009: Those zany zealots from the Westboro Baptist Church have brought their unique fashion sense to the Sidwell Friends Lower School in Bethesda Maryland, along with a message for Sasha and Malia Obama: Your father hates you.

This has been described as a new low for the WBC, whose 15 minutes of fame appear to be ticking into their final seconds as fewer and fewer counter-protestors are are coming to their events, and their tone has shifted from anger to mocking.

If you'd like to get angry again, check out these links for some fun facts about the Phlps clan:

8. So Fred Phelps has a long history of beaing his children and his wife . . .!!!
Edited on Sat Nov-28-09 02:17 PM by defendandprotect
Could we have guessed -- ???

Tragic -- and I agree that most of this religious crap hurled at young kids before the age

of reason is mental abuse -- !!

Sundays were particularly strict. Nate was expected to dress formally and present himself in the church auditorium by a certain time. The sermon that followed was always “fire-and-brimstone preaching.”

“I know that very early on was under the influence of those drugs,” Nate said. Pastor Phelps was attending law school and would take amphetamines to stay awake and barbiturates to come down. “It spiralled out of control was prone toward violence….He just wasn’t tolerant toward the presence of all of us kids running around—and the accompanying noise….He would beat the kids with his fists and kick them and knee them in the stomach.”

Nate doesn’t know why his father was such an angry man; he didn’t know his father very well. “I just know that that’s the way he was and I stayed as far away from him as I could.”

He remembers when his father would force him and his siblings to run five to ten miles around the high school track every night. One evening another boy was riding his bicycle along the outer lanes of the track, and Fred began yelling at him to leave. The boy’s response was to keep riding on the track, and Fred’s was to push him off the bike. The boy left, screaming, and 20 minutes later a truck came screeching into the parking lot. The boy had brought his father, who approached Fred and knocked him to the ground.

“The man was threatening to sue him,” said Nate. “Then my old man yelled at us all to get in the car and we went home, and ended up beating my mom that night.”

that story up on their IPhone & read it to the Phelps gang. Wonder what they would have had to say about that?

9. Why are they taken seriiously?
They're just doing this to push the envelope of free speech, its what they've been doing for years.

13. I know - the sure way to get rid of these buffoons
would be to pay them no attention at all. They crave attention - if they know in advance that nobody's going to cover their bullshit protests, they wouldn't have them.

I don't think there is a soul on the planet who would miss hearing about Fred Phelps and his tainted brood.

They are so bizarre, that I'm willing to bet they are causing some to look at their own hatreds.

11. what a waste of breath . . .
You can only have a rational conversation between rational people, neither of which is the case here. Ignore them and they will eventually slither away. I am sorry for the little boy who seems to want to be anywhere but there.
I noticed someone got their slam in at homeschoolers. Having homeschooled our son much of his life, I can tell you we never once went to a rally like this. I hate it that all Christians and all home schoolers get put in the same basket. Most of us are just quietly going about our business of making the world a better place. These people are just spreading hate and anger.

14. The WBC is to Christianity as the KKK is to white people
I don't think that anybody anywhere thinks the WBC is representative of christians any more than they think the KKK represents the typical white person.

As to the home schooling- while it may be an unfair generalization as far as your son is concerned, you can't deny that over the last couple of decades homeschooling seems to have become the option of choice for whackos and people who like to have one more reason to bitch about their taxes.

22. the answer we would give to our son . . .
When our son would ask us what he should tell his friends who wanted to know why he was home schooled (some thought he had a dark, mysterious secret as to why he couldn't go to school!) we would tell him it was because we loved him more. The generalization about home schoolers is a form of prejudice just like any other and should be condemned as any other form of prejudice. The largest group of young men incarcerated are black, so should we say that all young men between the age of 18 and 24 who are of an African American background are criminals? Anyone in their right mind wouldn't say that out loud but people assume that all home schoolers are children of "wackos" as you put it, because you hear more about them anymore. The "wackos" as you put it, are probably not actually home schooling. Don't put us all in the same boat. More and more solid, educated people like us are home schooling our children as a choice because of the public school situation.
Just an interesting note that I haven't seen addressed by anyone here or anywhere for that matter, Jaycee Duggard home schooled her two children since she really had no choice. Both girls were tested and found to be on their appropriate grade level (the oldest is 15) even though Jaycee only had a 6th grade education. Given her very limited resources, she must have been very intelligent and creative to be able to teach her children at grade level. It will be interesting to see what happens to her children when they go into public school and if they maintain that level.

16. Okay, so Leviticus 26-27:29 Is part of a whole thing about what happens when
"...you walk contrary to Me and are not willing to obey Me..."

And it's goin' on about how ten women will bake bread "... and you shall eat and not be satisfied."

"And after all this, if you do not obey Me, but walk contrary to Me, then I also will walk contrary to you in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. You shall eat the flesh of your sons, and you shall eat the flesh of your daughters. I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and cast your carcasses on the lifeless forms of your idols; and My soul shall abhor you."

Well, there's eating and then there's "eating". So, I'm thinking it's about how falseness (such as over consumption) causes harm, such that the physical well-being, i.e. the bodies, of future generations are affected. Their well-being/life is less.

I'm not certain what to make of this as it goes on in 27-1:8 to prescribe for us the monetary "valuation" of different kinds of people "When a man consecrates by a vow certain persons to the Lord ..." what each is worth in shekels and women, of course, are worth less than men. And that goes on until about verse 8, where we find out that these valuations are TAXES, "But if he is too poor to pay your valuation, then he shall present himself before the priest and the priest shall set a value for him..."

So, though I'd say there is some question about whether we are actually going to eat babies, it's pretty clear that God favors taxes.

20. You must keep in mind that Leviticus was the law Moses gave
to the newly formed nation of Israel.
It was not intended to be commandments from God as most of these wack jobs think.
God gave only 10 commandments in the bible, the rest is the Laws of Moses.
And laws are intended to stop certain behavior and are changeable....the commandments are not.

18. I thought Sasha looked traumatized in recent videos.
Her usual smiling face was gone. She was shy about the cameras and strangers. She is a very sensitive child. Malia is probably old enough to view these troublemakers for the fools they are.

From the point of view of the teachings of Jesues, it's bad enough to harass adults, but much worse to trouble children. Jesus said "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of heaven."

Further, the Ten Commandments instruct us to honor our father and mother. How dare these hypocritical attention-seekers frighten Sasha in this way.

19. P.P.S. you all, these parasites are also capitalizing on Viggo Mortenson's new movie The Road.
which is based on Cormac McCarthy's astoundingly DARK & BEAUTIFUL book by the same name.

The idea here is that folk will go see the movie and then they will KNOW that Fred Phelps is God's own personal mouthpiece.
