George W. Bush was an incompetent buffoon who could not be trusted. The fact that an air-headed teeny bopper said that we should blindly follow him reinforced that point.

Because of this, we should place zero trust in any future President ever again -- even one whose foreign policy judgments have been wise, prudent, sound and deliberative for the 10 months he's been in office.

If you really want to reach back to bad behavior during the Bush years, you should also look to the lack of nuance and the tendency to view everything in black and white.

Blindly following a President who pissed away our trust and who had a history of making awful decisions is wrong. But so is dismissing a President who many of us voted for because of his character, intellect and judgment. We elect people to study the facts and use their best judgment, not to be our proxies. It's true that this trust needs to be earned and can easily be lost, but if we reaact too far in the other direction and give our leaders no benefit of the doubt -- even when they've earned it -- the system cannot work.
