1. We're so fucking schizophrenic
Legal punishment for a felony is the loss of your civil rights plus restitution, for a duration. When that "time" has been served, your former "status" needs to have no bearing on your current rights.

One of the worst anachronisms of our society is the idea that one loses one's civil rights for life - it's like saying you don't get to be a full citizen, yet you have all the obligations of a full citizen, under penalty of law.

Community service programs are another pet peeve - if you want a fucking slave, just call it that. Forced or coerced labor is slavery.

Shame on our so called "justice" system.

2. When people have lost their rights, it makes it easier to pull them back into the system
It has never been about letting people be free of the prison / "legal" complex. It's about having people who can get jerked back into the system and keep it ever growing and expanding. What would happen to the poor hacks, lawyers, judges, and prison slave contractors if the prison population shrank? Think of all the poor suppliers who charge top dollar and then provide shit to the inmates. What would happen to their sorry asses?

3. Interesting omission.
No one mentions the right to possess a firearm. Another civil right abrogated by a felony conviction.

I support the restoration of ALL civil rights upon completion of a lawfully imposed sentence and or probationary period. Voting. Right to hold public office. Firearms.

You cannot claim the status of free citizen, without the same rights and responsibilities all other citizens enjoy.
