THIESSEN: There have been so many misstatements told about the enhanced interrogation techniques, comparing them to the Spanish Inquisition, to the Khmer Rouge. And I have to tell you, Christiane, you’re one of the people who have spread these mistruths.

AMANPOUR: Excuse me?

THIESSEN: I’m sorry. You went to S-21, the Khmer Rouge prison <...>

AMANPOUR: Yes, and we saw the waterboarding there that they used as a torture technique. That’s called spreading the truth! <...>

THIESSEN: We did not submerge people in a box full of water. <...>

AMANPOUR: That is called waterboarding, you can say in whichever way you want! <...> You’re trying to obfuscate the debate here. <...>

THIESSEN: It’s nothing like what the CIA used.

1. We all have to refuse to let this issue die
Torture, extraordinary rendition, denial of due process, targeted assassinations...

If we can't get justice in the present, we can at least work to make sure that the history books used by our grandchildren contain the truth.

Howard Zinn has already taken a step in this direction, with his two-volume "A Young People's History of the United States." My grandchildren are only 0.75, 3 and 4 years old, but these books are already on my bookshelf waiting to give them a broad perspective on history.

As Orwell wrote, "Those who control the present control the past." We must refuse to relinquish control of the present, or we'll relinquish control of our past (and future).

7. Agreed. We should also never forget that this is the mindset that was in charge for 8 years
When people parrot 'meet the new boss, same as the old boss' I'm going to show them clips like this.

8. Gave the book, the adult version, to my daughter when she was 12.
It's one of the reasons she is who she is today at 20. A good hearted, liberal minded socially conscience person.

11. Great book.
It should be required reading in high school, but it never will be.

There's a rebuttal in print now: "A Patriot's History of the United States."

Why is patriotism always part of the rebuttal to truth?

13. I like it because it gives kids a chance to challenge what they are told in school.
My daughter stopped believing the propaganda when she finished the book.

Didn't know about the other book, I'll put it on my list of books not to read.

14. Zinn also has "The People Speak"
"The Young People's History of the United States" was recently published. I was in the children's books section at B&N, saw it on the shelf, and grabbed it.

Zinn, Chomsky, Klein...

There is a lot of truth out there for people able to see it.

5. So did I. Professor Sands gave him a good slamming, too.
"Straight out of Monty Python" was too kind, though. More like the Seventh Circle in Dante's Inferno.

12. When you don't have facts to refute what someone says, look for the lies and accusations to follow.
Always a sign that one has the truth on their side.
