4. We went yesterday to an OFA demonstration/rally at Melissa Bean's (IL-8) office

Organizing for America has been organizing demonstrations at wavering Democrats' offices, phone banking (in person and on line), etc. for the last week. Since we'd been out of town, we decided we were compelled to head from downtown Chicago out to the northwest suburb of Schaumburg to make a last stand.

We were delighted to see how many people took time out of a weekday work schedule to stand with signs in support of Health Care Now, and to urge Rep. Bean to stick with her yes vote from the previous bill, despite much disgruntlement in her rather conservative district.

It was scheduled from 11-12:30, and by 11:30 or so, there were close to 150 of us, I'd estimate. By noon, maybe 200. We got a lot of thumbs up and honks from the drivers coming past during the heavy lunch-time traffic, and also some thumbs down and a lot of perplexed drivers who just couldn't figure out what was going on. A few teabaggers who showed up in the beginning began madly calling for reinforcements on their cell phones, and towards the end there were maybe 40 of them all tolled.

There were television crews and reporters there, so we knew there would be coverage. Late last night I found the video from the local NBC news coverage. I was infuriated. Never did they show the whole crowd to show how the "pros" outnumbered the "cons." They made it look as if it were 'some came to support and (as many) to protest.' Arghhhh. But what else would I expect from a media intent on making this a story about he said/she said.

Well, it was fun anyway--a beautiful day meeting cool people of all ages from all over the metro area. And oh yeah, I found a pair of shoes on sale at the Nordstrom's across the street to wear to my son's wedding. Success all around! (Despite the news!)

I wonder do these guys even know what socialism really is? Or has socialism become the new N-word among the tea baggers? Did anyone else catch the irony when the tea party folks kept screaming who's paying you or are the ALO-CIO paying you at the guy holding the sign? And what the tea party folks complaining about money for? Freedom works got them covered.
