I document events and this one is special
It is the fact that we may not be the only life forms in the Universe

I think this is an important point in our consciousness

Much of the info is in that video
I admit I placed pretty pictures of Titan in it with its atmosphere and content
and pictures of Titan plus of the Big Universe
but thanks also for the link of the other article

I'll second that statement.

Your "New Agey" self is getting ahead of science.

It'll probably turn out the radiation ( OMG! we've radiated saturn! We desroy ecerything! ) belt of Saturn are making the gas changes when the intersect the atmosphere of titan.

If there is life, it's probably nothing more then single cell amoeba.

they are preparing us that Life exists on other planets

If the aliens are so far advanced they can make it here, I would think they would have the intelligence to notice we can't even get along with our own kind. Why bother?

Not love, not laughter, not children. ( Not women. Ahhh... fine works of art.. Now only if they weren't so crazy... but I believe that's my failing )

It's disappointing how things are and that they get better at a snails pace. If we can avoid destroying everything, there is hope.

There's always hope.

and join the discussion there. Dr. Bob Zubrin has figured out how to get to Mars on NASA's existing budget. Very stirring, meaty video compared to the one on this thread.

57. No they didn't an amateur discover it...........
Jupiter loses a belt

Over a period of a year, one of Jupiter's two main dark belts -- the dark stripes most visible in amateur telescopes -- has faded completely away. The South Equatorial Belt (SEB) is gone, leaving just the north belt (NEB) viewable in small telescopes. Credit: Anthony Wesley
Astro Bob explains in more detail, remarking: "Jupiter with only one belt is almost like seeing Saturn when its rings are edge-on and invisible for a time -- it just doesn't look right." But, apparently, this is an event that happens rather more frequently than the Saturnian equinox, once every 3 to 15 years.

The photos above are from Anthony Wesley, the same guy who discovered the impact scar on Jupiter last year; but you don't need to be as fabulous an astrophotographer as Wesley to see this for yourself. You do, however, need to get up early; Star Walk (my iPhone astronomy app of choice) tells me Jupiter rises around 3:30 a.m. right now. If you don't feel like getting up early, just check out Wesley's website for more wonderful photos of Jupiter.

9. "Could be life" and "hints of life" is not quite the same as "there IS life"
Edited on Sun Jun-06-10 11:45 AM by Hugabear
The articles linked in this thread don't actually specify any direct confirmation of life, merely processes occurring that could indicate life exists on Titan. We've been down this road before, with scientists making grandiose claims based on indirect evidence, only to have to come back later on and admit that their conclusions were wrong. Fact of the matter is that there very well could be life on Titan, or there very well could be other natural processes taking place that we don't know anything about. When dealing with a totally alien environment, it seems somewhat foolhardy to rush into making judgments like this.

BTW - how exactly does this qualify as a "political video"? Shouldn't this be posted under GD or one of the science forums?

One of the dozens of possible explanations is a biological process. But it'd be one entirely unlike anything that exists on earth.

The belief in and quest for extraterrestrial life is exactly like a religion; anything that doesn't have an obvious explanation must therefore be proof of God extraterrestrial life.

The default explanation is "it's a miracle!"

49. Belief in life on Mars is far more than religion. It has a lot of basis and we should go there.

Methane is being produced seasonally in alternate hemispheres (when it's Martian summer in a given hemisphere). This is strong evidence of life because there are no geological processes that would explain it there.

Someone said, titan has plate tectonics. Hydrogen can be catalyzed bu platinum. Plate tectonics could bring platinum to the surface.

There are a thousand things it could be.

Besides that, a microbe on a moon of Saturn gives you 2, (2!) data points.

Hardly a start to a new calculation of drake equation. Considering 400 extrasolar planets have been found, and a good percentage are nightmare worlds, I think it's a little soon to start breaking out the bubbly.

I think this is an important point in our consciousness <-- needs to retune the antenna. Could, Could, COOOOOOUUULLLLDD!

58. Like I said, if confirmed.
But having 2 confirmed and disparate life sources would change how we think of the drake equation indeed. As it stands we don't know how rare life is, and it could be the case that our planet, our solar system, is extremely unique in harboring life.

But if two bodies within the same system with substantially different atmospheres and surface chemistry both have life, it makes it far more likely that other systems, similar to our own, will have their own inhabited bodies, thereby changing the way I would calculate the equation.

If confirmed.

Of course, it can be calculated in many different ways, depending on the assumptions or estimates you make.
