“Currently more than 20 million Pakistanis have been affected by the worst natural disaster in Pakistan’s history. That is more than the population of New York State. The enormity of this crisis is hard to fathom, the rain continues to fall, and the extent of the devastation is still difficult to gauge.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones, those who have been displaced from their homes, and those left without food or water. The United States has and continues to take swift action to help. But governments cannot be alone in helping the people of Pakistan.

“That is why the United States Government through the Department of State has established the Pakistan Relief Fund for all Americans to join in this tremendous relief, recovery and reconstruction effort.

“The pictures we see coming out of Pakistan are painful images of human suffering at its worst. In surveying the lives and landscape affected by this disaster, we see brothers and sisters; mothers and fathers; daughters and sons. We see 20 million members of the human family in desperate need of help. This is a defining moment – not only for Pakistan, but for all of us.

“And now is a time for our shared humanity to move us to help. Americans have always shown great generosity to others facing crises around the world. And I call on you to do what you can. Every dollar makes a difference. $5 can buy 50 high energy bars providing much needed nutrition; $10 can provide a child or mother with a blanket; and about $40 can buy material to shelter a family of four.

“So I urge my fellow Americans to join this effort and send much needed help to the people of Pakistan by contributing to the Department of State’s Pakistan Relief Fund. Please go to www.state.gov or send $10 through your mobile phone by texting the word FLOOD, F-L-O-O-D, to 27722.

“If we come together now, we can meet this challenge and ensure that future generations in Pakistan have a chance to have the bright future they deserve and fulfill their own God-given potential.”

7. That's a breathtakingly beautiful picture.
I am so glad to see that the government is finally stepping up to help. I hope it will be in time. I see the comment from the UN Sec. about it being like a slow Tsunami. I think that's another reason why it's not getting attention.

When it's a big event like an earthquake or Tsunami, it's more of a shock.

Anyhow, I think with people like Sen. Kerry and the UN Sec and Hillary publicly asking people to help, it will begin to get better.

5. Government cares but the public?
There also needs to be more persuasion as to explain the aid giving to Pakistan. the government may care, but some poeple may object.

6. Here's the explanation you're asking for....

Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC
August 19, 2010

Today during remarks at the United Nations General Assembly’s special session on Pakistan, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the establishment of the Pakistan Relief Fund. Created by the United States Government through the Department of State, the Fund serves as a mechanism for the public to contribute money to the ongoing efforts in Pakistan.

The most effective way people can assist relief efforts is by making cash contributions to humanitarian organizations that are conducting relief operations. Cash donations allow relief, recovery and reconstruction professionals to procure the exact items needed (often in the affected region); reduce the burden on scarce resources (such as transportation routes, staff time, warehouse space, etc.); can be transferred very quickly and without transportation costs; support the economy of the disaster-stricken region; and ensure culturally, dietary, and environmentally appropriate assistance.

How to Give:

There are three ways people can contribute to the Department of State’s Pakistan Relief Fund:

1. Go to www.state.gov (or directly to www.state.gov/pakistanrelief) and complete an on-line form to donate via credit card or ACH account.
2. Go to www.state.gov (or directly to www.state.gov/pakistanrelief), download a donation form, and send a contribution by mail.
3. Text the word FLOOD to 27722 to automatically give $10 through a mobile phone. The charge will appear on the monthly statement.

About the Pakistan Relief Fund:

The American people have always shown tremendous generosity to others facing crises. The Department of State’s Pakistan Relief Fund allows the public to give money to help the more than 20 million Pakistanis who have been affected by the floods.

Contributions will go towards programs run by the Department of State and other federal agencies for relief, recovery and reconstruction efforts in Pakistan, or to provide funds to international organizations, non-profit organizations and other appropriate recipients for relief, recovery and reconstruction efforts in Pakistan.

Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law.

The Fund will accept contributions from individuals as well as organizations. It was established under the authority of a variety of government gift authorities available to the Department of State, including Section 635(d) of the Foreign Assistance Act, Section 3(a)(2) of the Migration and Refugee Assistance Act, and Section 25 of the State Department Basic Authorities Act

The Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, the Under Secretary of State for Management and the Deputy Director of Foreign Assistance will allocate donations to State bureaus and other federal agencies for relief, recovery and reconstruction efforts in Pakistan, or provide such funds to international organizations, non-profit organizations, the government of Pakistan and other appropriate recipients for relief, recovery and reconstruction efforts in Pakistan.

Further Public Donation Information:

Text SWAT to 50555 to send $10 to the UNHCR for ongoing emergency relief efforts.

A list of humanitarian organizations that are accepting cash donations for flood response efforts in Pakistan can be found at www.interaction.org. Information about organizations responding to the humanitarian situation in Pakistan may be available at www.reliefweb.int.
