5. Old news, too.
"On November 8, 2010 Denair Middle School Principal Aaron Delworth asked a student to remove the American flag from the back of his bicycle citing racial tensions at the school and fears for the students safety. Four days later, Denair School Superintendent, Edward Parraz overturned the decision again allowing the student to display the flag adding that the racial concerns would be discussed with the students involved and their parents ."

7. The school was concerned about the boy's safety
http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_16604443?nclick_check=1

Edward Parraz, superintendent of the Denair Unified School District, said that a campus supervisor asked Cody to remove the flag earlier this week out of concern for his safety.

Those concerns arose from a dust-up among students last school year after some racial tensions arose when Latino students brought Mexican flags to school around Cinco de Mayo.

OK, I could sorta understand the Cinco de Mayo incident (involving some Live Oak High School students who wore American flag T-shirts during that day) but Veteran's Day? WTF?

And this story has been flying around the right-wing blogosphere...y'know, the same people who are so obsessed with the American flag that they become arrogant (the flag is more important than, let's say health benefits for 9/11 rescue workers!)

9. Fearing for the student's safety?
I'm sorry, that doesn't sound like an acceptable excuse to me. The principles way of diluting racial tensions in America is to tell a kid to not fly the American flag? What? How about having a talk with the other kids who were apparently involved with these racial tensions, and telling them that in America there's nothing wrong with flying the American flag?

The day that flying the American flag is seen as racist will be a sorry day in this country, or any country for that matter. No national flying his country's flag in his own nation should EVER be seen as racist. This is absurd.

10. The principal erred on the side of safety.
The superintendent trumped that decision by asserting the student's civil rights. I'm certain that physical measures have now been implemented to assure those rights. Having said that, principals, teachers and support personnel in a school building are first and foremost responsible for the physical safety of their students. All in all, this matter was handled well by all involved.

15. First, you don't know the whole story. Second...
...you're setting up a false premise. Nobody, nowhere, did anybody say that flying the American flag was seen as racist here.

It was heightening tensions between students, according to the principal.

He's there, he's responsible for safety, and if the flag is seen less by some as a symbol of national pride and more as a jab at other students who flew Mexican flags, then it's not the principals job to defend the national flag, it's his job to keep students safe and the school atmosphere one where respect exists and learning can occur.

In America people are allowed to fly any flag they want. But when flying flags is done in a school to provoke another group, be it the American, Mexican, or skull and crossbones, then I stand behind a principals decision to say flag flying is out.

11. I suspect
I suspect his grandfather wouldn't be so proud of his grandson standing up for his 1st amendment rights, if he had an Iraqi flag on his bike or say, repeal DADT.

Just sayin'

19. This is OBE at this point.
Student can show the flag any day he wants. Students identified as making the threats are being "handled".
