Along with Somalia, the United States is one of only two countries in the world which have not ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. It has been claimed that opposition to the Convention stems primarily from political and religious conservatives.

1. Please tell me this woman is now in jail
Edited on Wed Dec-01-10 11:36 PM by Ken Burch
And that the boy is no longer in her home.

I wonder how old the sister who was videotaping this was, and why she didn't stop her mom? (the answer to the first question would have a lot to do with the answer to the second, of course).

13. In the primary grades - a card system is often used to
keep track of a kid's behavior for the day. The cards are usually color coded (like green, yellow, red) for increasing infractions. Every one starts the day with the same color - let's say green. Each child has a pocket on the chart with the "good" card showng. If a child misbehaves he (or she) had to take out the green card and put it in a different pocket, this leaves the yellow card showing, a kind of warning, like a yellow light. Usually this motivates children to watch themselves so they don't have to "pull another card". If a kid is having a bad day they may end up "pulling three cards". Often teachers don't report a card pulled for little stuff, obviously this boy's teacher sent a full report. I had a little girl in my class who more than once used up all the cards and had me writing notes as well. Some kids are slow to mature and sitting still is really hard. If they have crazy parents who scream at them and abuse them --- well how would they learn to be rational and kind and caring and have empathy??? 20 years with little ones - the treatment of this child just breaks my heart.

2. unspeakable - no soul - lifeless inhuman bully

They should have walked her off the stage and into an awaiting patrol car, brought to prison for child endangerment.

3. Both kids need to be rescued.
And it would be a rescue. Mom needs to be in jail and if dad is around and allowing this he needs to join her in jail.

8. He is, and threatens to call Child Protective Services before the end of the day
if the problem isn't resolved.

(You'd think they'd already be on this if anyone from their office had seen the show).

My main question is...as a licensed therapist, isn't Dr. Phil bound by the "mandatory reporting" laws?

10. Good question.
CPS should have been on set regardless.

As a licensed therapist he should realize resolving a problem like this will take years, if it's even possible for this whack job.

20. "Dr." Phil isn't a licensed anything except maybe a driver
He was licensed decades ago but he had to surrender it after sleeping with a young vulnerable female patient.

9. I'm afraid I don't know what pulling cards is supposed to mean
I think that hot sauce punishment is popular with the fundie crowd. I think the actress Lisa Whelchel advocated it in her book.

I'm not linking to that, but while reading it I discovered that there's also an entry on the practice of "hotsaucing" itself:

12. I literally dont think this woman
Edited on Thu Dec-02-10 12:41 AM by Ramulux
understands what the term "child abuse" means. I have never seen that shit with the hot sauce before, I have seen hot sauce used to stop kids from sucking their thumbs, but forcing the kid to let it sit in his mouth is so fucked up.

I wonder if you asked this woman if she thinks parents should be allowed to torture children, what she would say? What word do you think she would use to describe what she is doing to that kid?

Another thing that bothers me about this, is that she is on such an obvious power-trip and loving it. It is also obvious that she would never treat another person her size like that, you think that skinny little white woman would do that to a teenager her size? I dont care how disciplined a kid is, if they are fully grown and you try to force them to drink hot sauce, someone is getting fucking smacked. Shes only doing this, because she knows the kid is powerless to do anything.

To quote Louis CK

"Kids are the only people in the world that you are allowed to hit. They are the most vulnerable and most destroyed by being hit, but its totally OK to hit them".

24. That female needs a good dose of her own medicine. Maybe
she would understand that it is a form of torture. In-your-face screaming, cold showers, the hot sauce remedy will adversely affect that child forever. She is in the process of creating hate. The boy will hate her and I already hate her.

15. What town is this woman in?
Did they identify her by name? This child MUST be removed from that home.
Dr. Phil is an opportunistic bastard. Anything for ratings. The moment his staff
received that video she should have been reported.

Please keep us updated if possible. I won't be able to stop thinking about that
little boy.

16. After Dr Phil warns her to change her behavior she had the audacity
to ask “My only question is do I lower this arbitrary bar for all of my children or just for Kristoff?”

Even after watching herself, being scolded by some therapist, watching audience members cry, she still didn't get it.

That poor little boy. Those poor kids. This video made me cry.

don't think it would do any good seeing as how she dosn't think what she is doing is wrong.

disgusting behavior. That poor little boy will hate her for his entire lifetime.

17. The Family is Mormon
Reading a bit about this on "Dr." Phil's site, the family is Mormon and the mom got the cold shower idea from another Mormon mom who's...wait for it...military husband told her about this torture technique. Kristoff is her stepson.

I'm sure the daughter spends her time reading the Twilight books and trying to be like her hero Bella.

Stupid idiots.

19. I watched the show and was sickened
I cried as that poor little boy was tortured and listened to that woman (who I cannot call a mother) try to justify her behavior toward him.

He is her adopted son, a twin. She explained how she felt an "instant connection" to his twin brother but felt nothing for Kristoff. Then, she goes on to talk about how the child is "bad". She's an awful human being and should not be permitted to have children in her home.

Does anyone know if this is common discipline for Mormon families?

27. I'm pretty sure 95% of the Mormons out there(including the polygamous fundies)
would say this woman was completely batshit crazy(ok, they might find more of a "Napoleon Dynamite" way of phrasing it, but they'd agree with the sentiment).

21. Sadly, this is what religion can do to people.
I would say that religion is the worst enemy of civilization, with conservatism a close second.

23. Did I miss something?
I didnt see anything in the clip that had anything to do with religion ?? Unless it said something on the show about it but not in the clip?

I could never do anything like that with my kids but there was a time when it was normal to have kids mouth washed out with soap or something. Some people are just crazy.

I think hearing the kid cry makes the video more powerful but truth be told. I have a 6 year old who cries worse then that when he gets a time out. Not sure why someone would torture their child like that. But as bad as this looks society doesnt care if you smack your childs mouth or smack their butt. Whats worse? cold shower or getting beat with a stick of some kind? I remember getting spanked at school when I was a kid. Things need to change. That poor child is stuck with that crazy ass mom.
