Democracy Now! - democracynow.org
The U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on President Obama's controversial tax deal with Republicans following its approval in the U.S. Senate. While taxes on the wealthy will decrease under the proposal, some tax experts are predicting taxes on the poor will actually increase. Democracy Now! speaks to Democratic Congressmembers Rush Holt of New Jersey and Raúl Grijalva of Arizona, who say they will vote against the deal.

2. I live in Indiana and got an email from my congressman,
Pete Visclosky, the other day that explained exactly why he opposed the bill. I thought he'd cave today, but he didn't, he voted no. He's the one person who keeps me halfway sane when it comes to politics since our senators ignore us peace activists. He listens to us, he meets with us whenever we ask, he knows us personally and he usually seems to try to do the right thing for the people he represents.

3. You're lucky! It seems like our reps have less and less contact
with us any more. Nancy flat out refused to hold town halls for years.

4. Pete holds town halls all the time and he always takes time
to meet with us or join us to speak at things like Green Jobs fairs. And if he's not in town, his staff is always willing to see us. We march in parades with him. In fact, a couple years ago when we were all supposed to 'occupy' our congressional offices until we got arrested to try to get them to defund the war, they told us, "We're not calling the police on you guys, we're going home. The tv's in there, the fridge and the coffee maker's in there, just stay out of the filing cabinets because there is constituent information in there and that's private. We'll see you in the morning." They wouldn't arrest us even when we wanted them to!
