2. Our system has not worked well.

Children of successful or wealthy parents can afford college. They don't really have to work or compete to get in and pay tuition.

Children of less successful or relatively poor parents have to put themselves in tremendous debt or compete for the very few scholarships that are available in order to go for college.

One of the reasons that our schools do no measure up is that parents know when they put their child in first grade that he or she does or does not have a chance at college and a future. What is the point in working really hard or investing a lot of time in making sure your child does well in school if the child is just going to be indentured by school debts as an adult?
