Sen. Al Franken

Minnesota's families, retirees and seniors would suffer under plans to privatize and make severe cuts to the Social Security administration. That's why on Monday, Sen. Franken joined Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and 300 supporters in denouncing their plan.

"Social Security provides a safety net for Minnesota families and allows America's retirees to age with dignity," said Sen. Franken. "Trying to reduce the deficit by making cuts to a deficit neutral program is illogical and I'm going to fight to make sure that Social Security benefits remain at their current levels."

When Sen. Franken's wife Franni was 17 months old her father died in a car accident leaving behind his wife and five children. In addition to Franni's mother's wages, her father's Social Security survivor benefits ensured that her mother could feed her family and stay in their home.

There are currently more than 850,000 Minnesotans receiving benefits from Social Security who would see immediate changes if the proposals are enacted. And ultimately, decreasing Social Security benefits would affect the millions of Minnesotans currently contributing to the Social Security system.

1. I am proud of Al Franken
I supported Jack Nelson Pallmeyer during the primary when Franken was elected. Having seen him in action I will support Senator Franken as long as he seeks public office.

I don't think he should have gone along even as far as he did with the republicans but at least he and Senator Sanders and others are digging their heels in now.
