Original estimates of xenon and krypton releases remain the same, but a TEPCO recalculation shows dramatic increases in the release of hot particles. This confirms the results of air filter monitoring by independent scientists. Fairewinds' Arnie Gundersen explains how hot particles may react in mammals while escaping traditional detection. Reports of a metallic taste in the mouth, such as those now being reported in Japan and on the west coast, are a telltale sign of radiation exposure.

1. This is what I've wanted people to see.
The arguments are all over the forums. I see theoretical discussion. Bright people who know their stuff. But like this man says, it's anecdotal, and nearly impossible to measure. But we have enough evidence to know it's there. It's not a problem when the body wins. It's when we get cancer that this becomes an issue. We're talking about the environment in which we lead our lives, and the lives that follow ours.

The car air filter is a very good real world example.

2. No matter who says what.....
...I'll always say that to use radioactive materials to boil water is clearly in the top ten stupidest things humanity has ever done.

3. But it's elegant.
Well, in theory. However, when you add in the 747 crash proof containment vessel, and the extreme complexity of the control systems, and the potential for accidental radioactive material release into the environment, and the disposal of waste material... WHAT!

4. Actually I think it's quite clumsy both by design and functionality......
Edited on Mon Jun-13-11 01:20 AM by DeSwiss
...and obviously way too complex for the majority of humans to safely operate.

- Now if you want to talk elegance, go to nature:

6. A peacock with its showy plumage, invests quite a bit in exposure to predators.....
...in a never-ending quest to get laid.

This "Weiner" thing, is the same old weiner thing that it always is. It was man's first toy, and he will never give up playing with it.

Meanwhile we are distracted from the real world of corporate murder and war. That's where the real (power) money is...

But that's just me.

21. Yeah, because that radioactive material extracts itself from the ground...
Edited on Mon Jun-13-11 01:57 PM by liberation
... and puts itself back in once it is done. ;-P

There are other forms of generating electrical currents, by boiling water, that do not involve burning fossilized plant matter or the radioactive decay of heavy elements.

24. I agree.
I happen to like concentrating solar and wind quite a bit.

That was a simple either/or, especially given the volume of material alread mined, that can be demilitarized and used for fuel, that is already out of the ground.

That would be really bad.

9. Not to downplay the story but the upper right photo inset is not the Nuke Plant it is a refinery
And it is not in this story! It is just the fact that we need to keep the facts straight or someone will disavow the whole story by the fact that the one photo is not Fukushima!

10. Nothing can justify this stupidity.
Aside from the shear arrogance of http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/20110517_Japan_officials_ignored_or_hid_nuclear_risks.html">constructing a nuclear plant in the proximity of earthquake fault lines, they http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/01_19.html">fucked up the http://www3.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/04_07.html">engineering and science from the http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-13587264">start by their http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-13587264">own admission. No matter what anyone tries to disavow or say. This didn't have to happen and it doesn't have to keep happening.

- We can forget about everything else until we get to that point, or what's the point of the discussion?

We. Need. To. Stop. Poisoning. The. Planet. We. Live. On.
{That includes refineries on fire.....}

22. Like I said I'm with you on the stupidity of nuke plants, I studied at the old Army Reactor school!!
I feel no need for nukes since they are not safe and create way to much waste! Now even my retirement plans are being rethought as I had planed on cruising to Japanese islands. Now I think I'll be staying south of the equator! Just please don't use misleading pictures showing something false like a burning oil refinery stating it is a nuke plant!

17. Did you notice that he had to keep referring to
"independent scientists?"

That is because Japan and America have taken the government scientists off monitoring these effects.

Do we really have a Democratic President?

Well, enjoy global warming, folks, because your hysteria about zero-carbon-emission nuclear power means there is no way to avoid that.

23. This ideal alternative universe
Edited on Mon Jun-13-11 02:45 PM by felix_numinous
where machines are maintained in top condition, and safety standards are in perfect order, and there are no natural disasters, and human beings are competent and honest --this is the world supporters of nuclear power think we are in. A world with no crime.

Human beings are not meant to wield such power, that has been obvious since 1947.

I love real science, science fiction, new technologies and gagets--but power comes with responsibility that it does not get into the wrong hands. With the MIC/arms dealers and powerful cartels loose in this world, not to mention unstable Earth conditions, nuclear and other advanced technologies cannot be controlled in a safe way. People have to work to shut these plants down. We can figure out how to empower ourselves.

25. Where would a person get reliable honest data?
The wife and I reside in the Philippines, although we are currently on vacation in the US.I would be extremely interested in finding out what the exposure rates have been (and are) for the Philippines.Information from the Philippine government would be suspect (as is the info from our government). Our fear is that with the closer proximity to Japan,we would perhaps be risking more by returning there, but I really don't know.

Any advice?
